Title: head
Post by: adafish on February 19, 2008, 17:31:16
Just had a new head fitted to the 300tdi, after finding the last one had a crack in it....Now got it back and she seems to br blowing more grey/white smoke when cold and on tick over...was'nt doing it on tick over before.but the grey stuff was showing bad before (reason i had the head done)......i've also got a slight vibration between 30-50 mph (they did do the prop uj i asked)..(could always be i've another one gone )....But the main worry is the grey/white smoke.......any ideas gang.....ADA...she runs worse than before she went in

take it back and if they say nothing is wrong get a second option from someone else and then go back to the garage if there is a fault!

first make sure you have a  invoice / receipt which is warranted!

have you done a sniff test on the smoke yet ?
is it more grey, or more white ?
run it for abit to see if it settles down
monitor how much water its using though

was it a brand new head or 2nd hand/recon ?
could be that thay aint torqued the head down properly  :?

Do you know which head gasket it had before the swap? lots of people say "just put the 3 hole in there" but there's a damn good reason why there are 4 different thicknesses.

Very good point that man.  When I got Julies running again I made sure it got fully wrmed through on the drive so I couls test the cooling system, then once the intercoler was ready I took it for a good long run, I wasn't really bothered about what came out of the back, just what fluids if any it used.

well she's gone back in...Had a slight tapping from the engine bay this morning on me way to work.....popped the lid up and hada listen, and sounded like injector, SO drove steadliy home and when at tops revs it sounded like a misfire thru the exhaust...When i got home did the injector test thingy and they were ok, then noticed a water leak at the front of head, took it straight down to the garage and left it there........see what happens next.. :(
