Seem to get a silly or serious fault every month at the moment - hose leak and wheel bearing shot in December..... (X reg Defender Td5 CSW)
Anyway - latest gem the indicators when turning right self-cancel as you turn the wheel to the right. Real pain when going round a roundabout etc as I have to keep shoving the stalk back up so that people can see where I'm headed.
It cancels properly when returning the wheel to the left and no probs at all with left turns/indication.
It was starting to do this a while back before I had to replace the indicator/horn switch assembly in the column - so I know its not that (i.e. it was present with od and new switch). The self cancelling must be triggered by some lever/mechanism on the steering wheel/hub?
Any ideas what can be causing it and any idiot proof remedy???

<mod> Fixed for you :-) </mod>

When you are travelling in a straight line is your steering wheel straight or off-centre?
If it is off-centre this could be your problem :-.
-
All central in a straight line. Just cancels as the wheel passes a certain point as I turn through the corner/roundabout.......

Remove the steering wheel, then turn the little plastic bit 180 degrees, and refit the steering wheel.
if that doesn't work, remove the wheel again and turn it back the other way, 360 degrees (180 back to its original pos, then a further 180 back again)
that should do the trick.
-
I'll try that as well cos mine does the same.
-
I had exactly the same thing, and the two metal lugs on the steering wheel were not lined up with the little plastic piece on the column .
-
Just back in - great stuff, much appreciated chaps. I'll have the wheel off tomorrow and practice my geometry! Cheers, Age

Yes thanks all, mine does the same.

The blue collar that the steering wheel lugs fit into has a small arrow cast onto it, this should point to the left, then you know it's the right way up

Removed the steering wheel today and the Blue lug was a bit on the wee, so I did the above and it was still the same, so I turned it 180 degrees so the arrow pointed right, it is better but still not 100%.
-
Now this is getting odd......!
Wheel off and steering column cowl off - blue collar in right place and when turned by hand all works fine - right and left indication, turns past 'lug' with a click, straightens up on opposite lock past lug and cancels indicator. Maybe there was a bit of swarf/crud in the way and I dislodged it (he foolishly convinces himself)
Put it all back together, cowl on, wheel on, torqued up, and guess what ......... indicator cancels out as you turn right. Bu**er!!!!!!!!
Has to be someting to do with the wheel clamping down onto the blue plastic collar??? Or the plastic cowl interfering with something????
Bit fed up with it now............ A
