Any ideas on this one? Cold wet mornings are here, TD5 defender has decided that 4 cylinders are enough and no. 5 can join in later.
If it was petrol I'd swear it was a wet HT lead...... Fifth comes in after a few miles - seems to be quickest if I turn off the engine once its a bit warm and then re-start - all 5 firing then mostly. Might have to do this a second time if I try it too soon after starting.
Engine is early x reg TD5 with about 130k on the clock. Ring any bells with anyone? Cheers, A

There is usually an oil leak that runs into a multiplug on the loom somewhere......though I can't remember where......look for an oil leak 8)

The oil leak would be the one which runs into the ECU multiplug. Disconnect the ECU and see if the connector is oily.
A duff injector could also cause this; or, possibly, low fuel pressure from an iffy pump.

We've had this fault very recently too.
As the others have said, check for oil at your ECU - i think it's the red plug but i stand to be corrected - just disconnect and check for oil - 2 minute job.
If all's clear it could well be like the problem we had - the actual injector harness , which fails at varying points and is a common fault apparently.
The harness is about £37 from the dealer so it's not too bad and is easy to replace.
My advice would be check for oil at the ECU - if all's clear - then renew the harness - which you'll have to do anyway if there's oil there at the ECU.

Just got in and found all this good stuff - really grateful chaps, and will do the checks over the weekend. Only daft question - where is the ECU with the red plug...... (hopeless I know - I am learning to use primitive tools soon........). A

As mentioned - check your red ECU plug for oil contamination
Also worth checking all the wiring plugs are correctly latched onto each injector - easy to do, just remove the rocker cover and unplug each connector, then reconnect making sure each one latches correctly.
This was common on a batch of Td5's.
On from this...
You need to get your LR plugged into some diagnostic kit, and get them to check the live data page (esp. the cylinder compensation) - as well as checking for any logged faults.
Also, get them to click test each injector.
You would need to make sure this was done under the same conditions that the fault usually occurs.

Appreciate all the advice - too disgusting today to fit the new injector loom, but once that's in I'll get the diagnostics done too. A.

Well the new injector loom is in (and hopefully the few gallons of oil seeping round the rocker cover gasket reduced slightly too) - after one cold run this morning the signs are good - no misfire, in fact smoother than for some time. Injector 'signal' must be getting through a fair bit better.
I'll find someone local with diagnostics to follow up Porny's advice.
VTRdaz - does that mean you also have a thing for v twin honda's too? My VFR is waiting for a slightly brighter day for a winter blast. I reckon a bike and a LR are the best combination of vehicles you could have!

Couldn't agree more - love the nice days in winter - as long as it's not too cold!
Glad the truck sounds like it's fixed!
