Title: Swing Away Wheel Carrier
Post by: Mostie on March 04, 2004, 12:19:23
Anyone ever tried to build their own swing away wheel carrier? I'm thinking I might give it a crack when I get a chance as there doesnt seem to be all that much to them and to be perfectly honest I can justify sparing the time to play more than the money to buy one!!

Can anyone with one already fitted possibly take a couple of snaps for me, specifically of the mechanism by which it attaches to the door in order to swing out parallel with the door. I think I have my design and mechanism sorted, but it would be nice to see how my idea compares to the likes of a mantec etc.

Cheers guys,

Ross.

That's a Pivlock though and doesn't automatically move with the rear door.

If you can get a copy of Land Rover World March 2004, on page 138, there's a guide to installing a swing away with loads of pictures :D

Nice one Ollie, I'll pop down and get a copy at lunch time.

It was that one on ebay that made me think about building my own, but I couldnt see on that one how it opened with the door.....and apparently it doesnt!! My colleagues and I came up with loads of concepts of mechanisms but then I found a website with (i think mantec ones) and it said about using a damper/shock absorber which I thought was nice.

Cheers for all the pointers guys.

Mostie - if you have problems getting a copy of March LRW let me know I'll scan in the pages and post over.

If you need this send me either a PM with your address or an email with the same details.

Best Regards

There's a guy on LRUK Forums that's built his own... It doesn't swing with the back door, but there's some pretty detailed construction photo's on his web site http://www.550-spyder.co.uk/Landy%20Area/Landy.htm

I've got some photos on my webshots of the fitting of my mantec: http://community.webshots.com/user/kentzer.

Cheers
