got some (very small amount) of funds to spend on the defender and was thinking of either jackable sills/tree sliders or a lift kit.
if I went for a lift kit would I encounter any problems if I went for a 1.5" lift with regards to having to change other parts to compensate for it?
not very mechanically minded so not wanting to put stress on driveshafts etc if I can help it. plus got limited funds for this project.
please help :? :? :? :? :? :?

Personally, I'd go for the sills. I've fitted a pair to my 110 and they've been so useful.
They're also great in suprmarket car parks. They protect your doors from trolley damage and they also double as steps (if you get the wide/tree slider ones) :D
-
What tyres are you running? If you're on standard tyres you can get a couple of inches just from some new rubber! Also helps to stop you getting stuck! If you go with the sliders then North Offroad do some good uns.
Best of luck whichever way you go.

cheers guys.
run 235/85 by 16's Hankook MT's which (so far) have got me out of all the bother I get myself in to.
considering them for looks and for practicality as well.
any other ideas or opinions?

Sliders are nice. Got mine from Mills Services - excellent product, excellent price, excellent service :)
The lift kit's for sometime in the future - like you I have 235/85/16s although mine are BFG MTs.
-
thought about the BFG MT's but went for a cheaper tyre incase I needed to replace them often, however have not seen anyone else use Hankooks so may find it hard in the future to find replacements
-
kankooks are good used them for two years now £45 each,on sunday took them when simexs failed ,proberly the driver but who cares
-
Rock/Tree sliders without a doubt, got mine from Paddocks, the galv+black powder coated ones and they are excellent, invaluable in my experience.
-
running 1.5" lift on my 90 + 255/85x16 BFG MTs - she just drives up Stanage Edge - no worries! 8) :D
don't get stuck very often (and I've still got the flimsey LR steps on both slides) - have to hammer one back into position now and again, but hey ... that's life. So sliders are down on the list.

Been up and down stanage, chapel gate and all the other derbyshire lanes in my 90 running standard suspension with anti-roll bars still fitted using 265/75 BFG MT's (equiv rolling radius to standard 235's) so i'd rank sliders higher than suspension mods. Either do the works and go the whole hog on somthing like suspension, or leave well alone IMHO. :)

Do the sliders first. 8)
then figure out the next priority :?

Been up recently mate?
Cos I've been up 3 times in last 5 weeks - different everytime. And to be honest, a 90 on standard springs wouldn't have gotten up so easily due to the washout a 3 weeks ago.
But each to his own I guess .... fuel tank guard would probably be better than sills on an early 90 (not one of ya posh Td5 's mind  )

No, admitedly its been a few weeks, but not that long and i'm pretty sure i'd have got up there :)

What does a lift actually give you in the real world?
-
i like barnyfarmers question, anybody :?: :?:
never thought that this would be the response, i thought that the lift kit would have been everyones opinion. how wrong was I
good to get some help though
now SWMBO will be happy as she says the defender is tall enough

Well on a defender:
As far as i see it you get a few more degrees of approach and departure, but how many people actually utilise this? You can get pretty darn good articulation by upgrading suspension parts without having to lift, i think its porny who has a good set up at standard height. A lift in my eyes causes more problems than its worth... Someone feel free to flame me.

Ive been thinking of buying a 2 inch lift for ages and finally ordered one this weekend, i know all the bad points but i want my truck to look the muts nuts and just went for it. Will be buying cranked radius arms and cranked trailling arms next month when i get payed again. :D
-
So its aesthetics eh.
Oh i have thought of a real plus for a lift!!!
Allows the fitting of larger tyres and therefore can give you more ground clearance.
-
a +2 lift opens up the scope to fit up to 35" tyres 8)

Nope no flames here mate, I agree. Unless your going for extreme use or the extreme look then in my opinion not much point. I went through this a few months ago with mine and got the same replies.
The more sage members on here gave this advice.
Decide what you want to use your vehicle for, then decide what to do with it within your budget. The standard motors are very capable as we all know.
My ten year old defender 90 was sagging and looking tired. So, In the end i upgraded my springs and shocks to Heavy duty ones and this gave the benefit of a 1.5 lift without too much fuss or having to change anything either.
My tuppence worth :)

All i wanted to accomplish was to make mine sit level rather than the 110 hardtop dragster look and now it's done she handle's sweet as a nut certain roads i can leave car drivers floundering hardly any body roll and thats with no anti roll bars..

but u went for 33's instead
light weight
and with 35" on its blinning close on 2 inch, rather a 3 but she got a tendancy to toppel over at this height
hats off to the guys with portals and 3 inch lift

if you still want a lift, a nice cheap and blinning good kit, is nice cheap and chearful red/white rrc ( police spec) spings from paddocks 12 quid each and +2 procomp shockers
ask redline or miniman as these have this setup, and it works, it really works
but mine 2 heavy to use that setup
