Hi does anyone on here work for the water board?
I have recently applied for a water meter to be fitted at my house. Ang#ian water have called round three times now, each time with a different type of metal detector, but cant find where the main enters the property. They then inform me they will come back and dig a trench across the boundary to find where it comes onto the property. So when i come home at lunch time today my van sinks into 'said trench', which has been covered over nicely with shingle (not that im complaining, they put it back how they found it, just never heard of a whacker plate)! Ive just had a phone call to say that they couldnt find the water main so will i have an internal meter fitted. No wonder they couldnt find the friggin meter, they dug a 3ft trench across a 30ft garden, who employs these people.
Can anyone advise me, if i dig and find the water main myself, will they then come and connect a meter for me???????????????

Don't laugh, but ask down at the local pub whether anyone knows a water diviner. It might cost you a pint but it is worth a try.
And I would ask the Water Board where your external stop cock is.

Thats a good idea thanks! Oh yeah, an external stop cock............. they couldnt find that either, but to be fair im [!Expletive Deleted!] if i could!

is your garden paved/concrete? reason i ask is coz people pave over the stopcock, seen it dozens of times! also, if you find the main yourself the water company will come and fit the meter, but make sure you get a discount as you done the hard bit yourself!! :grin:

I know loads of people who have moved over to water meters.
I don't know a single one who doesn't regret it. Your water costs will go through the roof.
Don't bother getting the meter.

Do they still give you the option to come off the metre after 12 months if it doesnt work out for you?

Same here.
And we won't have an option in a couple of years, if I'm not mistaken. Something to do with global warming, or some similar manure.

Jay2578: We have no concrete or paving just shingle. Good thinking though!
The reason we want to change to a meter is the fact that the water rates aren't far off being double what we used to pay on a meter at our old house. I know its a bigger house but it shouldn't be any more expensive, as they're is only me and the wife!
Also the water board here do a 24 month switch back if you aren't satisfied, which is nice!

I'd accept the internal meter it could save you money over an external one if there is a leak.
You are responsible for the pipe from the edge of the highway but only have to pay for water that has gone through the meter, therefore if there is a leak on your pipe before the meter you still need to repair the pipe but aren't paying for the wasted water. I've seen leaks where over a cubic metre an hour is getting wasted and here in Devon we pay about £5 a cube so if you don't notice the leak for a day that's £100 gone.
