Title: Would just like to say thanks to the person.........................
Post by: les baty on February 14, 2009, 16:03:58
who discovered that by wedging a 2p at the 9.00 o'clock position behind the fanbelt tensioner on a Disco 300tdi, it does actually work, yay!!!

It has cured the horrific screeching noise that has been plaguing us for months!  My wife was very close to not driving it anymore, as everyone would look at her when she approached them!!!

Many many thank
Team Les Baty!

I replaced the tensioner on my sister's 300 TDi "asd a precaution" only to go through a series of strange problems including a cut top hose, 2 drive belts throwing off and intermittant failure of the PAS, only to find it was all cured by the new tensioner being twisted.

Stupidly you can't buy just the wheel and bearing, you have to buy the whole arm and it's the arm that was wrong

There is a thread over on LR4x4 about changing the bearing on the tensioner. Apparently a fella on ebay sells em for about £6. I'm sure it will be findable in the tech archive if anyone wants to look for it.

Yes it can be done, but I've not tried it myself although I do have one of those eBay bearings just incase..

Here's a link for all those interested..!!!

I'm a cheapskate tight wad Jock, I used a 1p piece thereby cutting the repair bill by 50%!  ;)

well, i did try the 1p, but was feeling a bit flush at the time and opted for the 2p.

I have however heard that some flash git used a 5p!!!!  Pulling out the stops eh!

I too would like to shake the hand of the man that dicovered the penny trick. I was on the verge of torching the old girl due to the noise but thought I would give the penny thing a go. Really didnt think something so simple could work....now no noise whatsoever and only took 2 minutes to do. If only every fix was as cheap and as simple.

For the extreme newbie, can someone please tell me just how the 2p (or 1p, or 5p etc.) is actually
inserted into the gap. Do I have to loosen the tensioner bolt? Any pictures of the coin in situ would be nice as well.

Or is it a case of, if you don't know how to do, leave it well alone...

First off, take the belt off - lever the pulley upwards using the bolt in the centre of the pulley and long bar then slip the belt off.  Then loosen the nut that holds the tensioner assembly to the timing case.  as there's no tension on it now with the belt off, a few full turns should have it slack enough to place the penny (or in my case as I'm extremely cheap, an old washer the same size as a 2p peice! ), between the timing chest and tensioner.  Hold the penny in place (the tensioner wont move about too much as its on a dowel), and re-tighten the tensioner nut.

Re-fit the belt and off you jolly well, silently go...................

Thanks for that.

I am definitely looking forward to the silent part...

Mines lovely and quiet now - the water pump bearings have failed, causing the pulley to fatally
damage the belt :( . Very quiet without all the auxiliaries running!
