Title: Yet another tyre question !!!
Post by: wizard on November 10, 2008, 12:34:34
I had planned on fitting 285/75 grizzly claws to my Disco, but since being let down by the supplier, i have a change of plan.
Mrs wizard likes the idea of a set of 35's on the old truck so my question is what size can i fit onto a standard disco steel rim.

I think the rims are a 7J. I assume the 7 refers to 7 inches wide.

While looking around for tyres most big tyres are marked out like 35 10 r16 or 35 10.5 r16 does this mean they are for 10 or 10.5 inch wide rims.

Regards

Yes, 7J refers to the rim being 7" wide.
The 10 or 10.5 refers to the width of the tyre, you could possibly get a 10" wide tyre onto a 7" wide rim but the manufacturer may not warrant their tyre unless it's fitted to an 8" or wider rim.
The xx/12.5/15 etc can be fitted to an 8" rim but they tend to look a bit balloonish - there was a link to some BFG spec's on here somewhere that states that the rim width should be 9" or greater for a 12.5" wide tyre.

Have you considered a wheel/tyre package? This seller on ebay seems to do some reasonable packages within your budget - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/JCS-4x4-Wheels-and-Tyres
plus you can offset the cost by selling your existing rims/tyres?

10 or 10.5 will be fine on a 7j rim.

Here is another good place to look for wheels they do packages as well. I'm going to them for my new wheels.
