hi all. is it possible to convert discovery axles to fit to series leaf springs? if it is, what is involed and where do i get the bits needed? i already have the axles and am a good welder.

This has been covered a number of times, but basically......steering links on coiled axle 'clash' with the leaf spring location. I've seen it done the once but I just can't remember where now, there were some clear mods to overcome the steering problem.
What are you trying to achieve? Disc brakes. There are conversion kits. If it's a SWB then LWB front brakes with a late S3 servo will give you pretty good brakes.

hi andy. yes i am trying to get disc brakes all round to be able to stop the v8 in a safe and secure manor. i know there are conversions for the front but i'd like them on the back as well and i am considering using a disco gearbox also. this would mean permanent 4x4 and as i understand from other members on here the series front axle isn't designed to take that.

the disco g'box won;t fit without serious mods to the chassis and such, since it is seriously longer, the only way to fit it would be a defender front :scold: :scold: :scold: :scold: :scold: :scold:

thanks for the reply. i hadn't taken into consideration the front end :oops:. it still has to look original. :) i guess i'll be sticking to the series gearbox as i do have all the adaptors for it.
Are series 2a/3 axles different to discovery/90 axles when measured from axle end to end? :-k

they're a couple of inches (ish, don't know the figures) wider so would also need some arch extensions :->

cheers for that. i didn't realise there was a conversion for the back axle as well. i will be looking further into this kit as it would save me alot of time.

But why dont you just junk a disco, and put in a 200tdi, gear box and axles, running gear etc, under the landy, I've heard it can be done, while keeping the front series looking. (and thinking of going this route myself)

It can - and has - been done, local 109 series to me has RR axles on leaf springs - dont stick out too much,200Tdi and I THINK its running an LT77 (dont quote me on the gearbox) - still has the original series front end..twin vertical pipes and a great turbo whistle when its booted.
Check out the landyowners site, and its a guy called Daffyd (spelling)

I know of an 88" with a series front end and an LT95 box in it, now that's a huge lump of a box. So I'd guess it is possible to use an lt77. I think Ashcrofts do an adapter for that box so you can use a series transfer box, thus keeping part time 4wd. Expensive but another option.

Axle/spring locating blocks require half inch spacing block to raise the casing so the rear drag arm clears the springs.
Lower shock mounts need to be moved backwards half inch so the drag arm does not foul on full lock.
You require 1 tone shackles, to gain the right caster angle.
A wide yoke front prop is required if you have power bolloxs.
You require approx 18 to 20 inches braided pipes to the caliper, going into a T piece to split the feed.
The drag link from the stering relay to the axle needs to be extended by 3 inches.
The brakes work fine with a series servo giving a firm pedal from the top.
I done this convertion 3 years ago and had no problems.
Considering the price and the work involved, it is a better option than buying the convertion kits which totals 1200 quid, as I have also gone down that road.

Been scanning through the forums as i'm looking to do this conversion on my Stage 1.I am a good welder and capable of doing all the saddles and whatnot but am not to keen to extend the steering arm by welding.Can a longer arm be bought? How did you do this?

Rather than extend the dra link, why not cut down a RRC one?
As for width, RRC axles would give the same track as a Defender, hence the wheelarch extensions. During the design process it was decided not to retool for the bulkhead, so the Defender stayed the same width as the SIII.

dude if you are still up for fiting disco axels use td5 lhd left hand steering assembily this sorts the steering issues there was an artical in lro about converting them. the zuse kits are only for the front from what the guy from zues enginering said nobody makes ones for the rear of a series land rover so if you want discs on the back that is your options
the axels are wider but if you are using standard 16/5.5 j rims than you wont need wheel arch flairs anything else and you'll need em

i was wrong they do produce f&r disk kits now but when i was looking at fitting discs to nelly they didnt and i couldnt aford them then (and now) plus the up side of going disco/rrc/lr def you get stronger axels and cv joints as apossed to ujs and you can fit any wheel tyre combi you want

The best disk kit is the zeus kit,£613 per axle. They use rangie stainless pistons and rangie seals but replacement discs r £60. The kit comes with mintex pads which also fit early lotus and jag. I have them on one of my motors and they aintbad!

Does this end up looking like the Jeep steering bars then? with the drag link attached to the track rod not the steering knuckle?
I don't think you need the TD5 then, I've seen the redundant steering arm on several Defender axles, or grab a LHD axle/knuckle. The only problem I see with that is that you won't get proper Ackerman steering geometry. Are you bothered :-k
