how on earth has he got it to sound like this?surely not just by taking out the cat and mid silencer?

Sounds like mine, but I do have a side exit exhaust
Can't beat that turbo whistle....plus I have a dump valve...not everyone's taste I know, but when you are making it up a climb everyone else fails, and you keep blipping the throttle and the dump valve keeps going off, sure makes your head swell, this big > :(shades):

GREENI: what engine is yours and i take it the side exit has no silencers?was thinking about going the straight through route on my 300tdi but worried it may be too noisy, removed the center silencer at the mo and its a nice sound just wouldnt mind it a bit louder!

I reckon the truck in the video has no centre silencer, obviously a snorkel which makes the intake noise more noticable, probably a performance air filter of some sort, and i'm wondering about a hybrid turbo, as it seems to boost up very early.... almost at tickover.... goes well too!!

At a guess (having done a few of them)...

It has an early not CAT Td5 down pipe, and a straight through centre silencer. The rear box will be standard.

Is perfectly legal, and will pass MOT's etc etc... also gives a marginal performance game.

I did the same mods to a 110 in Greece recently, and the owner was very pleased to say the least!!!

My 300 sounds similar (if not slightly louder) with a side exit, and a very small silencer (no CAT) - is also in 2.5".

The turbo isn't making boost pressure when you are looking at it idle'ing/being rev'd... (well a very, very small amount) is just the noise of the turbo spinning... standard or hybrid will do the same. (a turbo only makes boost when the engine is under load)

Also, you wouldn't here the air filter from the back - but you will with the window down when actually driven under load - with or with a snorkel.

he's put a nut and bolt down through his exhaust.

300tdi, turner performance head, K&N on way, custom built exhaust, no silencers...
A little too noisy really, sounds better when not on full throttle...
On my red 90 I got a Side exit from www.gwynlewis4x4.co.uk a little expensive, as you have to weld it all together, had it tig welded as it's stainless...may go for another though and sell my stainless one on ??
Reason I went for side exit is, it's difficult to damage it !!!

ian, ino you cant get proper boost without load, but my 200 will produce 0.5bar without load on it
that also is at the inlet manifold as its pointless fitting a boost guage to the turbo IMO
btw, that td5 is almost as loud as devon 4x4's 90

greeni's does sound awesome, but i can make my 90 whistle, beat that steve
and no it isnt the turbo whilstling aswel  :P

I am a big V8 fan.

But have to admit Greeni's sounds sweet. If I do go back to diesel and could get it to sound like that I would be well happy.

Chipped and bigger intercooler on the inlet side, free flow exhaust with final silencer on the outlet, IMHO.

A supplier of mine at work brought his latest toy, TD5 90, with such mod's down last time he visited (he knows my taste) just before he took it out to Spain to leave at his villa, it went as well as that one on you tube and sounded quite similar too.

Talking of boost gauges.... you want to see what I've had made

52mm Boost and EGT gauge - complete with proper pressure sensor to fit into the inlet manifold and a thermocouple for the exhaust manifold.

Fits straight into the hole on a Defender Dash (or a holder).... and I can do a fitting kit for a Td5 and 300tdi so is literaly bolt in (but 200tdi you need to drill and tap some holes).

See pics  :D
(the little button shows max recorded boost and EGT)

That TD5 sounded pretty nice, reminded me of the proper Audi Quattro (note the capital Q)

Just had to add silencers to my V8 as the missus was complaining of sore ears and even I have to admit after and hour on the motorway, softop off mine were too.

Built a twin exit rear (L&R) but I think it is too quiet, neighbours are happier tho'

Gotta get a youtube setup of the engine noise as these sound great...

Pity the driving on that video wasn't as good as the noise :-)

Cheers
