Title: horrible noise. Any ideas
Post by: muddyjames on January 08, 2005, 14:38:44
I have got a mega bad grinding noise coming from one of the front wheels. The off side free wheeling hub leeks the swivel joint oil out of it and it ran dry one day 70 miles from home and I drove with no oil in it. Since then I have had this horrible noise. It is like a stomach rumbling but loader. It is worse with the freewheeling hubs engaged. Could it be a wheel bearing? The whole Landy also vibrated under braking. Anyone got any ideas?

I still think it's a halfshaft UJ ;-)

The fact that it is worse with the hub engaged makes me think that.

if it was a halfshaft UJ, it wouldnt vibrate with the freewheel hubs disengaged

Maybe so, but why would a wheel bearing get noisier if you engage them ?

Does sound more like a wheel bearing if the whole car is shaking when you brake.....

If you are in two wheel drive, with the free wheeling hubs disconnected, your front halfshafts shouldn't be turning, so if it still makes a noise then, it has to be the wheel bearing.....

If you just spotted that you are in four wheel drive (mine is stuck in it permanently!) then it is possibly teh front diff, which would be noisier when you engage the hubs and put a load on it....

Or it could be a brake shoe disintegrated and jamming in the drum ?

Good Luck !

really difficult to diagnose, process of elimination. my last series three lightweight had a bad grating noise from the gearbox, so i changed it, still the same so i changed rear diff, still the same , and last but not least front diff, lo and behold cured.
