Title: Full Time 4x4 Wind Up?
Post by: Landyrover on October 05, 2006, 18:52:50
Hi Guys,

I have a KJ V6 auto with the full time 4x4 option transfer case. I used it today on the wet roads. However, whilst trying to park and manouver at low speed, it seemed to me that the front wheels were experiencing wind up - I recall this from the Cherokee I had 10 years ago which didn't have the full time option. I stuck the box back into 2x4 mode and the wind up was still evident. I got rid of it by reversing a short distance (a trick I recall from having a 4x4 with manual locking wheel hubs).

Wind up (if this is what it is) wasn't evident at speed - just when trying to engage full lock in the car park getting in/out a space...

The same thing happened this evening on a short run. I kept the box in high 4x4 (full time option) on a longer run and all seemed well - no evidence of wind up in the front axle.

Has anybody else experienced this? Or should I be dropping it back to the main dealer for a checkup (while its under warranty)?

Cheers,

Nick

My Explorer did this ...... but that was yank junk. Oh er... ;-)

Check that full time on the Jeep is the *same* as PERMANENT on a Land Rover .... I'm not sure it is.....the yanks love to lock the drive together - giving you the same sort of 4x4 as a series motor.....eeeek!

Hi Thrash,

Thanks for the reply! :D

The manual says you can leave the transmission in full time 4x4 all the time, including for driving on 'paved roads'...

That said, the 'normal' position is still 2x4 driving off the rear axle.

The part time 4x4 mode locks the centre diff as you'd expect, but this stays open in the full time 4x4 mode.

My guess would be that during the four years that have passed since it was made and before coming into my tender hands that the transfer box hasn't been used. as I said, during the longer run tonight (from Kingsthorpe to Sixfields via the country roads outside the town) there was no sign of wind up when I parked up at Burger King with the kids... 8)

Cheers,

Nick

I seem to recall our little Mitsi was a bit funny when we first used it in anger - proabably the same reason!

I'll find out on Sunday for sure when I take it for a spin (literally probably, still on road tyres) down a few Northants greenlanes... I'll work the transfer box properly thru all the options - and hope it doesn't go 'BANG'!  :D  8)

If its not been used in 4x4 it may well need some use to get the system loosened up...

That's certainly reassuring! 8)  I was thinking of just running it in full time 4x4 for a few days - what do you think? :?:

Full Time 4wd is just that, you can use it all the time if you wish. (Same as permanent on those fake jeeps (Only playing guys).

In the old Paj we had, we used to chuck her in 4WD at least once a month during the summer when it's hardly used just to keep things free.

EE

most folk with fulltime 4wd run it that way all the time.......sounds like you have sorted it already, but give it a few days more to be sure

Went laning last Sunday in the KJ - used the transfer box in all positions without any problem - no evidence of wind up, have kept it in full time 4x4 since then. Didn't get stuck either! 8)  :D  Few pics now uploaded to my gallery...

Combination of V6 and autogearbox was well suited to laning! 8)  8)  8)

Thanks! Looking at it stood on the drive, it got muddier than the pics suggest! 8)

No sign of getting stuck all day, despite road tyres and sticky conditions! 8)  Am considering lift though as engine skid plate quite low and did scrape along the ground a few times. Not a problem in the Northants mud, but would definately be a concern where the gound was less forgiving, like in Derbyshre!

Not sure :?

You could try MDG in Southampton,Surry of Road in err Surrey or maybe EDM in Bicester

Think a link was posted for LOST which may have some pointers failing that importing from the US you do get a good deal due to xchange rates

Try Quadratec if you do
