I seem to recall that it attaches to the steering column bracket somewhere, although, to be perfectly honest, it doesn't seem dreadfully important providing it's there :D

Is that just a connector or is it a warning device (dual circuit brakes)?  If the latter it should be mounted horizontally.

From what I could see of it, its the splitter unit. Two feeds in from the master on the top, two out below, and yes there is wires out too. Its mounted on a flange bracket off the chassis

No probs, handy having 2 1/2 s3's outside in the front garden

Apart from that was crawling round under one of them the other day, 3 brake pipes and 3xslave cylinders changed
Rather up close and personal with series brakes time again :?

The wires are a bit of a giveaway.  Don't put money on it but I think it's a safety feature rather than a splitter alone.  Each circuit in the dual system should be connected to one side, any imbalance in pressure (caused by a leak) forces a shuttle to move accross inside closing off the leaky circuit and activating a warning lamp.  When you're trying to bleed one of these sytems you may have to remove the switch and jam the shuttle with a screwdriver.
