Does anyone know if a tricked up 90 will keep up with a tricked up Paj silly question I know but at the mo I have a very nice tricked up 90 my pride and joy but since havin a back op I cant get comfy in it no matter what I try,I like the look of the paj but seriously what are they like off-road my 90 will p**s all over most discos ,range rovers and the like I know this cos I have had one but I dont want another disco as they suffer from tin worm a lot so what are paj,s like ? do they go well offroad?,I tend to do a lot of laning/quarries and pay and play days.I just want something that is reasonably cheap to run(parts etc)and Is very comfy and will keep up with the rest of my mates all who have 90,s serious answers only please and no slagging the green oval-------cheers :D :?:

Paj's can suffer from tin worm (but not half as much as a rangie or disco) like the one we got at work as it is used daily around the farm and towing a trailer all over the show
it is a K reg and it was imported into the UK in 1991

I use a Paj offroad and there's no doubt that they're very good, plus they tend to be more reliable than a Land Rover, but a well modified 90 will generally speaking be more capapble than a Paj. Having said that I've always found that my Paj will do everything I need it to.

I'm not gonna slag off the 90 but leave the owners to state the good and bad points themselves.
A Paj is very comfy, reliable and good all round capable offroader, they are cheap to buy and parts now readily available and cheap when you know where to look, some new mods can be more expensive like winch bumpers.
You won't get as much articulation on the front axle as they have torsion bars but can be adjusted to gain a little lift. Pop some good MT's on and you'll be surprised how much you can do on a standard Paj :D

Thinking of doing the brakes Friday Afternoon but need to get a bleeding kit first (no I'm not swearing when I say bleeding :lol: )
BTW, I had a SWB TD Shogun a while ago with BFG A/T's on and it was very capable but a bit lacking in ground clearance and the parts are very exspensive :shock:

The 90 is awesome off road..
The Paj V6 is awesome on road...

Paj is great on road, and amazingly, pretty good off road. Ive just got 31's KL71's fitted, and manufacturers limited slip diff, and it copes OK off road.
Bodywork is a little pretty to bend(unlike a 90) and it does have greater ground clearance under the front diff, BUT, hardly any articulation.
When you say modded, do you mean full scrapiron extreme kit, or just a lift and mud tyres. Id pitch the Mitzi on 31's against a Landy on 31's and Itd come out OK, but against a nutter 90 with little care for body damage, NO CHANCE.
Thing is, you can then drive home in air conditioned comfort, hold a peacefull conversation with passenger, and actually expect to arrive back home, which by the way shouldnt be littered with oil leaks and broken/spare parts.......
PS, despite the mick taking, check the underside of the Paj, theres little or no armour, and the autobox oil pan, and exhaust are a little...erm...prone to damage......

Hi mate no I havent got a nutter 90,just 32"tyres underside guards roll cage lights all over chequer plate etc I cant afford to shop at scorpion racing!!! :D I just find my 90 too uncomfortable and hard on the road cos of my dodgy back and I think the 90 is making my back worse but I dont want to buy a paj and take it round the extreme route at Langdale Quest or around Kirton Lindsey and get it stuck and look a right tw*t and my mates laughing at me saying"what did you buy that jap cr*P for???? :D :D

come n look under mine! i made nearly everything for this beast, i,m not saying its better than a 90 but better than most and worse than others lol
i,m happy with it and have pulled many a landie round with it, but i get stuck too
i have fitted a v6 rear axel with locking rear diff to it and getting an air locker for the front soon,
as for the suspension i,m changing it from torosion bars to coil overs just doing my home work on that before i do it!
dont bother me what you drive and who,s is better than others i help any1 who gets stuck as they help me,
but i enjoy it and thats what matters....but would love a v8 rangie burble sound in this that would finish it off lol
but bottom line is paj is better for me anyways! but i also like the 90,s
lol to hell with it there about the same! now i,m confused lol

v6 have a compressor in the boot activated by a swith air locker just like a detriot, dont get the 3.5 rear diff there too big and diffrent ration mine is only a 2.5td ( tricked and tweaked) and the v6 running gear is the same
yes paj,s rust,dent easy, but you have to admit it does look the dogs,,, :(shades):

Well,well,well ive really opened a can of worms here! to be honest I think its all down to what floats yer boat.I think the paj is a lot more comfier,faster and reliable than the 90,but the 90 has the edge offroad due to the live front axle its a shame its got independant suspension cos otherwise I think it would be unstoppable.I always used to think that the 90 was better looking and has a certain charm but that red paj is awesome!!! might be havin one of those soon I might even get a chance to drive it if I can keep our lass from behind the wheel!!!!------

Am I right in thinking that if you put a 2" or 3" bodylift and long travel gas shocks on it you can get 33,s on it without altering springs and torsion bars so therefore not losing any articulation????

reliability and comfort goes to the Paj, it is more than capable off road. 33" will go on with out too much hassle, even without carpets they are quiter than the 90. with a rear diff lock they are awesome, 2 minuses for the Paj upgrades are hard to get hold of and articulation, neither of these really take much away from its capabilities.
Like Mad geordie, others seem to have more of a problem with snobery than i do; i have been recovered by Land Rovers and also recovered them, for mainly onroad use Paj is like a car.
What area do you live as im sure a Paj owner would be more than happy to take you out in theirs.

Now I'm not saying the Delica is as good as the land rover, but so far everything I have done in the land rover my delica has done and the Pajero is more off road biased.
I look at it this way.... most of the time the Delica is on the road....
its more comfrotable to drive, big engine, auto box and lazy...
So makes the whole day out better...
but have also conceeded it needs a bit of help just incase... so here is what I have just installed....

In short... you want to compete, get a 90 its easier to mod and has short over hangs, you want to Lane and Pay'n'Play... a Pajero may be a better all rounder.
Or get a Delica and be a little different :wink:

nah 90,s r ok but i like my paj, as i said it does compete and leaves 90,s and sum 90,s leave me dont matter what you drive if you dont get stuck you havnt tried hard enough!
how many 90,s do you see r modded? 90% of them

i like to be diffrent and does what i want it to do, i done langdale extreme routes,frickley,drumclog ect so it does get me there and enjoy iy and get back, if i get stuck i get stuck i dont care, i always get out, i like to pull all makes of 4x4,s out if there stuck as i get them to help me, you get sum landies owners who think there 90,s are unstopable, poor soulds they should really get out more if they dont get stuck they havnt tried the goods bits,
every1 likes there own 4x4 i have spent alot of cash on mine so love it, and thats that! if i had a 90 i would spend cash on it too but it wopuld just be a 90 like every one elses

Looks good though.
Geordie think your wrong about the 90's, some look and are awesome; there are very few Pajs tho that look and are awesome, articulation being the biggest problem.
But have to admit put a locker on the back and almost unstopable.

Hey Strangerover I had a disco exactly the same as yours spent a fortune on until one day I took it to yhe mot tester and he said "well,I can weld it but I dont think machine mart will have enough wire to do the job"and he laughed and ever since then ive avoided discos, but yours might be ok I might have bought a lemon :D

i say sell the 90 and get a paj.
the paj is more relaible,better to drive,cheeper to buy,
90s are to much money for what they are,,unrelaible,and they rust(rot)like mad

Biggest problem with the paj is snobbery. Not only from the green oval brigade but the public.
EXAMPLE: Group of walkers are passed by a couple of 'tricked up' and battered Landies on a lane somewhere and they don't batter an eyelid. Do the same in a 'tricked' or even a standard Paj and it seems to stick out a mile :evil:
I drive a 90 for work and have a Paj for myself. Both have a long list of pro's and cons but when it comes down to reliability, comfort and value for money the paj always comes out on top in my mind.
Put a standard paj aganst a standard landy with the same tyres and I doubt there will be much difference between the two's offroad capability. The landy's much better front articulation can easily be canceled out by the paj having either a limited slip or locking rear diff as standard :wink:

its an interesting one indeed. in theory i would have the paj. in practice the 90. Lets not forget lady depreciation. buy a 90 with no mot, get it through a test, do some sensible mods and your money is secure. im not certain but i think by jacking up a paj you might de value it!

Ahhh but if you only paid half or even less for your paj compared to a similar plated landy AND you get climate control, heated leather seats, an engine that will get you home and a chassis that isn't full of holes, can't you afford to loose a few pounds in depreciation?

Depriciation is somthing i tend to worry about a little too much! i spent my lifes savings when i was 17 on a 110 CSW V8 for £1000. i put it through a test and sprayed an odd coloured door and sold it on ebay 7 months later for £1750. Bought my TDi 90 for £1500, spent at least £500 on it but i think im still well in the green if i sell it. but i wont do any mods that arent worth doing or can be removed and kept for my next landy.
With any luck an a year or two's time ill be able to sell what ive got, keep £1500 in the bank, spend a grand on another landy and start again!

well ive gota 90 and well happy with it , but my daughter has just persuaded me to get her a paj , so i collect a 2.5 j reg auto swb on fri . soooo cheap in comparison to a landie of same vintage and yep its got all the toys and none of the rot , all the comfort and quietness BUT :? no real character.
i had one of my own for a while and yeah it was faultless , but i wanted to tinker a bit so i got a big box of bolts and an alloy body to do that to ;)lol.

i was getting them imported, safari copies was getting them for £150 delivered to your door but cant get them now, supplied quite a few peoplw with them too shame cos i had a big list for more

Ah....the old debate!
For me it's Jap Cr*p everytime. No one is doubting the 90's prowess off road.....but I like to be able to stand up straight after I've been driving! Jesus those things are uncomfortable!
The biggest problem is articulation! As already mentioned, the front torsion bars mean a front wheel lifts going over a mole hill!But a rear locker soon takes care of that! I'm not a Paj offroader, I tow with a LWB Paj & off road my L200.
Tyres.....can't vouch for the Paj.....but the L200 is easy to body lift! Mine's on a 2" (ish) suspension lift with a 3" bodylift & wears 35" tyres. Minor rubbing on full lock & max suspension compression, other than that....lovely!!
The biggest problem with the Paj v 90 discussion. Both vehicles are capable, some more so than others......depending on personal modifications. But what doesn't seem to change is the way the majority (Not All!!! :clap: :clap: ) of Green Oval owners sneer with disdain!
So.....comfortable? Paj wins
Reliability.......Paj Wins!!!
Extreme off road.....7 outta 10 times Land Rovers will win. But then along comes various modded mitsi's & the apple cart is turneth over!!! :twisted:

i saw that l220 at drumclog! well smart mate, mine has changed abit since the last drumclog but wait for drumclog 9 and you will see it
to me paj,s are good offroad i like them when done up right look well smart, and with difflockers capeable
i love defender 90,s there good looking, capeable, good trucks
i cant belive the banter between paj n 90,s both good trucks as you said, but if i had a choice...

Ok so im gettin this paj 2.5 auto with 100k on it , it aint had much mechanical tlc , so what should i be looking for apart from the obvious cam belt change and a full fluid change ?

Dont think this will help cos they are both mine! They both go offroad and both go onroad.
1) paj, better looking, comfier/more car like.
2) rangie, 3.9 V8 straight through exhaust ! Grrrrrrr :lol:
3) paj, MUCH more reliable and doesnt look as though it's spent the last ten years in the sea :roll:
4) Rangie. as fast as you want to go in something weighing 2 tons and rocks from side to side at traffic light's when you rev it :twisted: childish but oh sooo much fun :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:
5) paj, dog slow with [!Expletive Deleted!] economy
6) real [!Expletive Deleted!] economy
7) paj runs on veg oil :dance:
8) rangie tows the paj when stuck off road
9) paj tows the rangie when broken down :oops: :roll:
10) rangie likes to leave bits of itself everywhere it goes.
11) paj makes you hungry everytime you drive it cos it smells like mcdonalds :lol:
The list goes on mate. They both have good and bad points and wouldnt be without either to be honest. they're like part of the family :afro:

Well I don't have the Mk2 Pajero but the Mk1 Shogun and I reckon if you put the right stuff on you'll be showing 90s how to do it most of the time.

Pajeros don't have articulation simply because it ain't needed - mine has a +2" spring on the back and the torsion bars wound up around the same with +2" shocks all round. Also has a LSD on the back axle.
Also has a Xpajun 90mm body lift (http://xpajunoffroad.com) and is running 235/85 Insa Turbo Special Tracks although it will take the Fedima Sirocco 35" without further mods to the body
And yes it can thrash 90s in trials - there again it can also be thrashed by them as well
Does it get stuck - of course it does - how else do I find it's limitations :lol: :lol:

There is just one important thing that needs mentioning in the Paj v 90 issue. My 90 insurance costs £155 fully comp whereas a quote for a SWB 2.8 Paj came back at £385 and that was the cheapest quote - :shock: :shock: :shock:

well there as good as each other lol i do like kitted 90,s but i drive a paj and spent millions on it so i like the paj too ( but what i notice is a little suzuki pee,s on all of us) lol
but now just took delivery of steel tube to build my paj tray back!!! after looking at afew rangie traybacks look well smart

Having had a 2.5 swb Paj and now have a V8 Defender, I'd go for a Paj anyday as a general runabout and great toy off road, they don't need much to get them to perform well off road, just some M/T's, crank up the torsion bars and fit some LWB rear springs and there you go!
The Defender has 5" over shocks, dislocating springs, 2" body lift and 33" tyres, cranked radius arms and corrector, still gets stuck and drowns in water after a while, but sounds great! (or at least it did before the head gaskets went awol!)

Sold my pajero a month ago originally to by a standard car and a motorbike but then my work told me they were selling my old 90 off ridiculously cheap :dance: Too cheap to miss infact so looks like I'm going to be eating humble pie soon :doh:

One back to the Mitsi's, sold the 1988 Defender for £3,800 and bought the LPG 3.0 V6 Shogun for £2,500 so I have £1300 for toys and tyres :D :D :D :D :D :D

I managed to get £2900 for my '93 pajero and will be getting the '97 90 for £1200 :dance: But no money for toys as the wife demanded a 'proper' car :oops: Just as well it's already got a Huskey fitted as most the other toy's I want will be relatively cheap.

A 97 90 for £1200, are you sure it's not a Honda 90 motorbike :lol: :lol: :lol:, that's too cheap for a Landy 90.

I know ;) Great isn't it :dance: As said before I am buying it from work and boss told me I can have it for what it is valued at on the books. All cars depreciate at the same rate on an accountants spreadsheet so he came back to me with £1200 :dance: I tried not to rip his arm off whilst shaking on it :lol: And to top it off it has a barely used Husky winch fitted which with the bumper weighs in at best part of a grand :shock:
Only down point is that I have to wait 'till the end of the year for it :doh:

if i never spent so much on my paj i would have went for a def 90 to be honnest i love both of them when they are tricked up there both good!
look at the l200 on this months total off road mag now it will take one hell of a 90 to beat that! :clap: :clap:
