Title: Crazy EFI
Post by: random_badger on May 19, 2007, 09:12:20
O.K., just fitted a 3.5 EFI into a racer, got the 4 wires from the efi loom, (permant live, ignition live, crack live and fuel pump feed) spliced into the car loom, the engine runs but goes to 3500 rpm and sits there. Air filter is off, potentiometer has been set to 290mV at throttle off, and the throttle linkage is right back in the foot off position, the idle speed adjuster is right in at slow and all this has made no difference. The engine is a lucas L type from an F registered range rover classic auto, it now has a manual box.

Don't have any idea where to go next as the normal problem is getting them to run not slowing them down, any ideas would be gratefully accepted

First thing that comes to mind is a BIG vacuum leak (like a brake booster hose).  Second is the idle speed motor not working properly.  It does not have a spring or such to pull the idle down, the ECU has to move it about.
Never done a conversion like you have there, only fixed a bunch of 'normal' ones.  I assume you still have the code box on the truck somewhere - check it for a clue?

Good luck!

The flapper type EFI have an 'extra air' thingy on autos, that isn't present on manuals.  An in-line valve in what looks like a breather hose lying under the plenum 'neck'.  If you've got that, try pulling the wires off? Ah wait that's tosh you have an idle stepper so must be hot-wire. But leads to a thought ...

Hot-wire gives a little boost to idle when autobox put in D or R via the stepper motor. I think you may need to find how the EFi knows whether its auto or manual, and maybe link a wire to set it right?

cheers,
Ross Kennedy

IF it's a hot wire then there is a switch for Neutral and PArk or a resister for manual.

But, on an F I'd expect to see flapper EFi, plus there would be more than 4 wires to connect and you don't adjust the throttle pot.

So my guess is it's the flapper, not my chosen specialist subject I'm afraid.
