Title: Land Rover lightweight....whats it worth?
Post by: stratie on August 17, 2008, 17:23:21
Hi guys, can any one tell me what my landie is worth?
It's a series 3 on an 82 plate.
It's got a drop top hood in black mohair, it folds back and you can allso unzip the sides.
The hood and folding frame work was just over a £1000.
It had a new motor fitted at the end of it's milatary life, it's allso converted to unleaded and has an electronic egnition.
Webber carb.
New starter motor and alternator.
New brakes and brake pistons, plus new hand brake.
Rocky mountain parabolics.
The chassis is solid.
If and when i sell her, she will have 12 months mot and a new coat of paint.
The gearbox is spot on.
I've added some pictures (fingers crossed they work)

Hrrmmmm.... that is nice.

But - I'd be interested in it without the roof, the wheels and tyres... and as is save you painting/MOT'ing etc etc.

Even then,  I probably couldn't afford what you'd want for it.  PM if you have a price in mind though.

Hello mate, it's been along time
Im not a fan of the wheels and i dont much like the hood. As for the price.....
As you know i have been out of the land rover game for 3 maybe 4 years, and i haven't got a clue what lightweights sell for these days.
Cut along story short....
I did a deal on one of my moto cross bikes for the lightweight as i wanted to do some off roading. Now this is going to sound silly, but i think she is far to good to to turn into an off roader....lift kit/monster wheels and tyres ect.
It would seem a shame to wreck her. Cant be that many lightweights about now that look like this old girl.
I could put a set of standerd wheels her, and im sure i could track down a hood.

howdie mate

my honest opinion is the roof isnt doing you any favors even though it was exspensive, there is defo a market for Lightweights but it tends to be the army fans that will pay top money for a genuine ex services truck, especialy if its fitted for radio etc etc.

i dont think anyone will pay extra for that hood but ive seen lightweights go for £750-£5000. i bought one in a very similar condition to yours and had the same wheels but a standed hood, i payed £1600 for it but that was about 7yrs ago and from a mate.

id be tempted to stick the hood on eblag and see what happens, then try to pick up a cheap original roof or an aftermarket bikini roof etc give it a paint up and maybe try it at £2500.

that said when i had mine i fitted a bikini roof, 33/12.5 mud tyres etc etc, ended up doing a swop with a army fan about a year later who wanted to put it back to full milly spec, we done a straight swop for a mint 3.9 Vouge SE that i then sold for £3500 but again that was 6yrs ago when classic Rangies still made that money

i saw the lightweight a few years later at Billing full camo'd up with full Army kit fitted, looked the nutts and was probley worth about 5k then to the right person..

Cheers mucker
I'll get shot of the hood and wheels, and give her a splash of paint.
I'll find a second hand hood and set of wheels and see what happens.
Would the hood thats on it at the moment fit other landies?
Title: Re: Land Rover lightweight....whats it worth?
Post by: suggs on August 18, 2008, 17:55:04
fairly sure that standed hoods on 88 inch series landys and lightweights are the same, yours looks to be a bespoke hood  but theres a good chance it will fit..

i think you may get a nice few quid for that on eblag, not sure i would show pics of it fitted though just pics of it off the truck...

you could paint the wheels black, would look better..

a straight swop for a mint 3.9 Vouge SE

Now if you fancy swapping it for a 3,9 Vogue SE I just happen to have one......

....but somehow I think lightweights have held their money a bit better than RRC :(

weeeeeyyyyyyyyyyy stratie dude were ya been  defo go down the route of putting a standard tilit back on it  and also it might be worth trying to find some original wheels and tyres too :P but i would say if she is mint then 3k + ;) as i have been looking at light weights but that will be for next year. Good to see you back on the forums :D and good luck with the sale.

Title: Re: Land Rover lightweight....whats it worth?
Post by: stratie on August 18, 2008, 21:14:45
No mate, i really want to get back into it as we have tow pukka pay n play sites (foxham and mintey) plus so may green lanes. My racing days are over, i've had to many knocks and my body cant take any more. Both shoulders and one of my knees are shot to bits. Im held together with metal plates.
I just feel this landy is to good to kill off road, so i'll sell her (if i can) and buy a tatty one to do up.

I think it's worth £1,800-2,000.  The fact that a lot of it isn't standard or "right" puts a fair few of the ex-military folk off I think.

The fact that a lot of it isn't standard or "right"
The hood and the wheels is an easy sort out, what other parts do you think would need changing?
Title: Re: Land Rover lightweight....whats it worth?
Post by: Rich_P on August 18, 2008, 23:30:02
Spotlamps, wheel arch extensions and the tailgate doesn't look quite right to me for some reason (could be wrong/right?).

I know the ex-military crowd likes them in standard form, and I think that is one reason why the price has always been pushed up with standard good condition Lightweights.
Title: Re: Land Rover lightweight....whats it worth?
Post by: stratie on August 19, 2008, 01:45:57
The tailgate is 100% LW.
The spots and wheel arch extensions can be sorted.....thanks for pointing that out, as it was some thing i over looked.
Im not trying to make money on the LW. Im just trying to get my money back. I really think it would be a shame to off road a landie like this.

its not really a good time for selling cars right now, iv seen some nice clean standard lightweights not reach the reserve of £1000 on ebay recently, proberly better luck on 4x4web.co.uk and other such sites, i agree with selling roof, but id try selling as she is before taking all extra bits off!

I like the look of yours, have you any more pics you could post up?
I built this one a few years ago, and i have a good chance of getting it back. It's now got a dead gearbox, but i can sort that.
I'll have alook at 4x4web and see what the score is.
Cheers fella.

Suggs, im loving the canvas work, who did it and how much?
Allso what size tyre's and rim's were you running? and did they rub any of the body work?

Lightweight love, that is some kick arse looking bumper, whay size tyres and rim's are you running?
Allso did you have to mod that hard top to fit? I once had ago at fitting a truck cab to a lightweight, but the cab was miles to wide..how would you go about doing it?
Title: Re: Land Rover lightweight....whats it worth?
Post by: lightweight-love on August 20, 2008, 15:28:12
Cheers stratie, running 235/85r16's on silver mods, want to get muds on black mods next! hardtop is a s111 one so its fits as usual but sticks out half an inch on each side at back, series 3 truckcab shud fit but will be too long so u can get this adapter piece so it fits better, what was the cab off u tried fitting?
btw on ebay atm theres a fair few lightweights for sale.

I had ago at putting an s11a truck cab on an s111 lw but it was about an inch to wide on both sides?
I'll go and check ebay out and see what im up against.
Here's another one for you....
My reg plate is an 82, but how could i find out what year it was made??
The military reg plate was 17KA38

u wanna phone gaydon (google them for a number) and theyl tell you from its chassis number and is free.
none lightweight roofs over time pull the sides of rear tub out a bit so urs maybe was a nice n straight so wud stick out that much!
just hard to find lightweight hardtops so most have s111 ones.

all wheel trim done the canvas work for me, cant remember the cost but would say about £300-£400 with the frame kit and rear cover etc. tyres were 33/12.5 and had no issues with them on or off road..

the roof is a Bikini cab, a cross between a bikini and truckcab roof (had a roll up back) also the rear load space cover fitted into it with press studs..
cheers

Title: Re: Land Rover lightweight....whats it worth?

I would love to mod this lightweight, but at the same time i think it would be a waste of a very good straight solid truck. Original looking Lightweight's are a bit thin on the ground these days, so with a set of wheels, a hood, and lose the wheel arch trim/spots,  she would be a very tidy looking ex MOD LW.
You know the score, if i put a big set of off road rims and rubber on her it wont stop there.
Then the next minute you have a tricked up truck that looks a million miles from the original.
I just think it's a waste.
I think what i'll do, is advertise her, and see what happens. If she sells, then so be it. If not, i'll mod her to the max.
But at least i'll have peace of mind knowing that i gave her a fair chance of staying original.

Im a soppy git ain't i

It just so happens that i can get my sticky mitts on a V-8 motor and box ect  :D It's just having the time to do it.
Im off to a land rover auto jumble tomorrow (the 20th) with a pocket full of cash.
My plan is this.....
Im going to look around for a set of standard landie rims and tyre's, and a set of big tyre's and rims. So what ever comes first will decide the fate of the lightweight.
If i come across a set of stock rims, then i will go with keeping the lw as original as i can, ie hood ect.
But if i come across a set of big tyre's then i'll mod the old bus to the max.
It's all down to fate

It's only a small jumble, so chances are i will find the stock rims first.
It's in Hullavinton, are you going pux? Not to far from you.
