Title: Nato hitch on Civvy S3 Landy
Post by: carbore on October 25, 2007, 16:58:47
Hello,

I have a Nato hitch that I want to stick on my civvy Landrover Series 3.

This is for towing agricultural equipment on the small holding, such as a harrow or tow topper.

Height is not likley to be a problem? but is it just a bolt on to the Civvy rear x-member. The bits are are various places aournd the UK at the moment so I thought id ask here! If I need parts can you recomend where to buy.

I dont need an option for a ball hitch as the Freelander has one and im trying to keep costs low.

Thanks.

You may want to fit a plate behind the chassis cross member to spread the load, they are normally available from a towing spares place, just take the hitch with  you to ensire the holes are aligned, also a good look round the crossmember and where its welded to the chassis, they are prone to rot away on the seams

I dont mean just a look, get into the joints and have a good stab and bang around with a heavy screwdriver and hammer for any rust holes

As far as the actual bolts are concerned, make sure they are the high tensile type, you dont want the same size as on the ordinary 2 point towing hitch. Cause you are spreading the load over 4 anchor points, the bolts are a smaller size

On the lightweights, there is a 10mm steel plate behind the crossmember, which all 4 bolts go through -I would look for something similar ;)
