Title: 110 HT to SW conversion ?

I assume that it is possible to convert a 110 Hard Top to a Station Wagon or Double cab - but a) is it legal, and b) is it as easy as bolting the new panels on ?

With a Defender, anything is *possible* ;-)

It is legal as far as I know... you will need to inform the relevant people... (Insurance, DVLA, etc)

Conversion to station wagon will involve changing the rear tub, roof side panels, and probably some other bits and pieces.

Conversion to double can will be a new tub, roof panel (like rocking horse poo), truck cab rear roof, and you will have to source / fabricate / maybe re-use a bulkhead to go at the back of the passenger cabin.

Both jobs are possible...  you'll need to find seats, etc as well of course.

Thought so ! Seeing as I need a new roof, sides etc anyway, I'm wondering about doing it all in one hit - rather than rebuilding it ('it' still has got no name !!) as a HT then pulling it apart and converting to a SW.

I assume that mechanically and structurally (chassis) all 110's are the same, it's just the body on top that differs ?

There's some differant/omitted bracketry on the chassis, to allow for the differing pick-up points.
Essentially it should be the same basic chassis

I used to know someone who started with a hardtop and ended up with a station wagon but as far as I can tell the only original components were the number plates and the V8. A galvanised chassis was acquired along with a station wagon body shell and numerous other components, lucky he had an understanding wife :D

I called into Foleys (the conversion specialists) the other day, they are converting 4 110 Hardtops into SW's for a customer who 'mistakenly' ordered the wrong vehicles  :shock:  - needless to say, Foleys have most of the bits I need to repair my 110  :D

get receipts for the panels etc as you can be asked where you obtained them from by your insurance 110 crew-cab parts are horrendously expensive anywhere from £1800 - £3000
