Title: 110 Gearchange
Post by: Def90 on May 13, 2010, 15:14:58
Some advise please

I changed my old 90 for a 110. The 90 had over 160k on the clock and was fitted with an LT77 gearbox. The gear change was painless enough and on long journeys relatively smooth, even with MT's fitted.

Since changing to the 110, the gear change is quite "notchy", the 110 has a R380 box fitted. I have changed the oil in both the gearbox and Transfer boxes, with the appropriate MTF and 75/90w oils recommended by land rover. This has improved the change slightly ( I may be fooling myself, trying to justify the cost of the oil), but it's still far from smooth.

My Question - Having no other experience of the R380 gearbox, is this something I should expect or should I be looking for other causes for the notchy gear change?

Any Help appreciated

Not had a problem here on a 140k+ box, even when running with ATF in the R380. When I switched over to Landrovers MTF on that last change it just made the gearchange slightly slicker.

Hhmm,

Seems the jury's out. I can't imagine that Land Rover could have produced so many R380 gearbox's if the "notchyness" I experience is normal, but if there is no obvious simple fix, then I shall just have to put up with it until it falls apart 8-[.

Thanks

Update - I've changed the oil in the main gearbox and the transfer box again. Instead of the LR stuff, I replaced it with Morrison Lubricants oils - I've just completed a trip of about 1500 miles and the gear box, whilst still not the smoothest, is noticably improved  - At least I can't hear the transmission whine over the sound of the wheel bearings    :D
