Well the 90 deserves a paint job - I have started to rub down (great way to get the mud off using a sander) and ready for the Desert Sand. Issue is what should I use to protect the steel prior to painting and also what sort of paint should I use on the bare aluminium.
TIA

Self etching primer, the only stuff for bare aluminium & then wot ever float's your boat. Normal paint's & primers don't like to stick to bare aluminium or galvernising for that matter.

Aluminium etch primer (not steel etch primer) such as a zinc-chromate based one. Give the bare areas a quick wash with meths or IPA before priming.

What a terrible waste of Meths ;)
Thanks

If you are wanting etch primer in an aerosol, you will need to get it filled shortly before you want to use it. Otherwise it etches out of the can! Most paint factors will fill 400ml cans for you. If you want it for a spray gun, the same factors should be able to offer it in 2.5 litre cans.
Hammerite is a silicon (silicone?) based product, I believe. It is not good for painting over with other products. But it does stick to just about anything.

The tin I have is "Hammerite" Special Metal Primer for ideal topcoat adhesion on Aluminium, Brass, Galvanised, Copper and all other non ferrous metals
Any experience ?

Me changing my name again................ never
On the paint subject I've had a look at the product http://www.hammerite.com/webapp/wcs/stores/HAMUK/ICIPaints/servlet/ProductDisplayCmd?productId=255015&storeId=10102&catalogId=1&langId=-1&siteName=HMUK.
Looks as though it's an etch/primer with just the hammerite name on the tin. We do all Wickes hammered paint products.
Our web site is http://www.shipleypaint.co.uk/. If you click on 'about us' there is actually a picture of the tanks which I fill :D .
Anyway I'll check at work but pretty sure theadvice already given or indeed the hammerite product should do the job.

Right the etching primer should be fine.
I've in fact got some chequer plate ordered which I want sprayed black. So a first coat of 1 pack etch primer CT black then I can over coat with 1 Pack Poly Black for a nice finish.
