Title: wheel bearings
Post by: anaxemurderer on December 19, 2008, 16:50:43
Hello again... next problem

Its about time I sorted the squeel coming from the drivers side wheel. So i tried taking the hub of to see how the bearings are.... and there non existent! Possibly should have done this before now!

Anyway the inner race of both bearings has seized onto the stub axle sleeve. I was able to pull the hub and outer race off, which should tell you how bad the bearings were!

But now im abit stuck, i can possibly pull the first off but can't get the arms of puller behind the second. Am i missing something, are they actually supposed to stay on there?

Try using an angle grinder tomake a flat area either side of the stub and chisel off. Obviously be careful not to dammage the stub. If it won't shift a new/recycled stub may be required.

No they aint, and I have a couple in Winchester if you need it. You can also try cutting through it with a grinder, and then it releases the pressure on the stub.

Don't even bother tryin to save the stub axle, if it's had BOTH bearings weld on then the amount of heat in there could have damaged the stub, the surface will undoubtedly be damaged so that the new bearings will stick on before they sit in the right place.  Utter PITA and for what a S/H stub will cost throw that one away.

I got them off, with little damage but i reckon i might aswell change the stub to make sure. Can't seem to find stub axles for rrc on paddocks, anybody know a part number?

And any clue what oil seal it requires, the old one is an unidentifiable mangled mess! Its for a 1984 two door classic (3.5 carbs).

Cheers

what sort of set up is the hub and what sort of axle have you got? not sure if it going to be the same as my disco but all the hub seals are the same i think in which case its part number is FTC4785R

That sounds like one of them, but there is another at the other end of the hub.

Part No for stub axle 1970-85 is 593788. They cost £200.80 from Rimmers. Ouch! Paddocks do a second hand one in Salvage section for £50.

Hope this helps.

On earlier model there are two different seal part number FRC8222 is the outer seal and FTC4785R is the inner, but i'm not 100% sure

I'll have a look in my toolbox if I remember, I always carry a few spares.  The outer one, FTC4785 has come in several guises, the R suffix being one of them.  On later models it didn't have the lip facing the flange of the stub axle which keep mud out of the sealing surface.  Yours should have this lip sp check before you rip the bag open.
