I am thinking of replacing my old 4.2 landcruiser with a grand cherokee. The problem is conflicting specs for tow capacities so i would appreciate if any of you guys could shed some light on it for me.I will need it to tow a 2axle trailer with a 2.2ton landrover challenge car(total about 3.1tons)but some websites say the gc has a tow limit of 2.8tons whereas others say 3.5tons :?
oh,and i am looking at around 1999-2001ish and either 3.1d or 4.0/4.7with lpg if it makes any difference
Ta very much
Paul
-
i will check the book but IIRC it is sub 3tonnes
-
My 3.1TD was 3.5tons. Dunno about the petrol ones.
BTW, towing a Lardy with a Jeep is the ultimate oxymoron!

  I am afraid my faith in landrovers has dropped over the past few years,i think the defender is a fantastic car but the others have got too clever for their own good.If landrover stuck to basics they wouldnt go too far wrong but they are now aiming for the rockstar/footballist market and forgetting what made them so popular in the first place
If the tow limit is 3.5t i am ok,if it is below 3 then they are off the list i am afraid :? .I sold a turbo deisel cherokee(not grand) a few years ago because the limit was 2.8t so i am hopeing the grand has a higher limit
Paul
-
acording to 4x4 mag the legal tow limet for the grand is 3500kgs
the others are landrover defender
diatsu fourtrak izuzu trooper
most of the others are only rated to 2800kgs
-
Have put a deposit on a 1999 vreg 4.0limited with LPG.Not sure i have done the right thing but only time will tell.Pick it up midweek :D
Paul
-
Let us know what you think...
-
Oh dont worry i will  .It will have its first real test over the bank holiday weekend when its got to tow my landrover to pitlochry and back(around 700 mile round trip?).
it needs a few jobs doing first like fit a towbar(not much good as a towcar without one  )and it needs some new tyres, but i am looking for a set of different wheels cos i dont like the ones fitted.
Paul
-
Thats some test.... 8)
As for tyres try for some AT's ....wont affect handling and will be better off road...
-
hoping to find some 17" 5 spokes as fitted to the gc,then i wont have to buy new tyres for the 16"wheels it has got on now. Will go for bf goodrich ats if i can get them in an apropriate size
It will no doubt have to pull the trailer through some nasty terrain, especially on the Tay forrest challenge in august. But as i said ,it will be a good test for it.It is quite low mileage(56k)for a 1999 so hopefully should be a goodun :?
Paul
-
56k on a 99 plate
-
Don't worry about the LPG conversion. I doubt you will notice a difference in peformance, just in the weight of your wallet.
I smile when I fill mine up, although the price can vary depending on how cheeky the garages are. In the last week I have paid between 39p & 50p per litre.
BUT
Its still at least half price
-
I think at the mo,our local lpg place is charging 41p/per litre, bit better than 94p for unleaded :D
Picking car up tommorow so will put some pictures up to see what you think?
Paul
-
Any pics yet  ??
-
just got home, will take some tomorow in the daylight.1st impressions are very good however i have found a few faults already
1-alarm plips are a bit tempramental, may just require batteries?
2-o/s headlamp steamed up
3-feels a bit wooly on the front end but this may be due to worn tyres, will check pressures tomorow too
4-stainless bits to take off(a-bar and side tubes)dont like them #-o
5-k&n filter to secure a bit better
6-wants a bloody good valet
7-towbar to fit
will keep me busy this next few weeks
Paul
-
I..seems an idea
5...K&N... ...
-
has it got the older type fuelinjection on(has the throtle body vertical ) if so fit a throtle body spacer on it improves the mid range responce
fitted one to mine i was a bit sceptical at first but took it out for a run and you can tell the diference (i was towing 3.5 ton of unimog/trailer at weekend did fine even towed it with a punchered tyre on the trailer)
hope you like it as much as i like mine
-
where do you get these throttle spacers from?
This is the car in question  need to start modding a bit now i think.Does anyone do a suspension lift for 1999 gc's?
Paul
-
OK
First thing...it looks good
Throttle body spacer can be sourced from the US from the likes of Quadratec or 4WD Hardware, believe the best is a Hesco..so for a few more squids to avoid the hassle Mark at MDG in Portsmouth stocks them...
As for lift stuff.....see above
Oh and have a mooch on NAGCA for some more information
-
will look better wen i get rid of the bling  .Had a look at nagca, very interesting site
Paul
-
i got my spacer from specilist leasure made by airaid
and procomp do lift kits for the zj not sure about urs just give the a bell
how high do you want to go
in the states they fit the front coils on the rear it gives a 3-4" lift then all you have to get is a set of 3-4" lift coils for the front and sort the panhard rods out and lenthen the front lower control arms
will be doing mine (but making new control arms) in a few weeks
-
only want to lift about 2" cos i dont want to spoil it as a towcar.I just think it looks a bit limp as it is,i am used to a 4.2 landcruiser with a procomp lift kit and the cherokee looks a bit low
Paul
-
got my new tyres today, decided to stick with the 16" wheels cos of the larger choice of tyre sizes.Got some 245/70/16 goodyear wrangler at/r's.Also finished de-blinging it by removing the stainless side tubes and a-bar #-o
Paul
-
Looks good..
-
Got my towbar fitted, was a pig due to the fuel tank being dropped 20mm :x but at least its on(modified a bit  )
Has anyone got a contact number/website for MDG in portsmouth(for the throttle body spacer),also do you think it will benefit my car with it having a LPG conversion or wont that matter?
Paul

Fitted a 60mm Hesco TBS on the TJ last weekend and whilst the electrics get used to it am already noticing a positive change in low/mid range performance
MDG's service was good too
-
Mark does provide an excellent service, but you don't need someone to fit a TBS.
