Title: 4.6 engine swap
Post by: BigBlueBeast on October 16, 2011, 18:18:14
Hi guys, after an eventful engine rebuilt (conrod through block after 2 bolts sheared), I am on the prowl for another engine.

This post is not for trying to get one (although if you have one!!), but for experiences in removing the pre-99 engine.

Gearbox fitted, Gearbox split, hints and tips, anything to make the job easier than Rave!!

Many thanks.

Is this the P38?

I tried taking our the whole plant once, and once only.  Heavy and unweildy, difficult to split on the deck too and you can hardly lift the gearbox to refit it, do it on the car.

I can't inagine the P38 chassis is any wider and the V8 won't fit between the engine mounts on my chassis, so I dented it trying to drop the whole lot down whilst the axle was off.

Thanks for your advice RRB, but I managed to do it over the weekend. (Bobtailed Disco helped disconnect on Sat) and I removed it on Sunday, dropped in new engine Sunday and the connected it up on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Disconnected engine from Gearbox and lifted out on it's own. The 8 bolts were a pain in the backside, but they came out eventually. It all connected up very easily afterwards.

Yes to do the 8 bolts I use every extension I have and sit somewhere near the back diff!  The only other way in yas to flatten out a 14mm spanner and belt it using a crowbar as a pushrod from under the bonnet.

Not as bad if you're taking the gearbox off as you drop it a bit first.
