Title: Building an off road Discovery! (now inc taking it apart!!)
Post by: Jake on October 22, 2005, 20:01:25
Its started.
Big Blue is getting smaller and Challenger is growing.
Today i stripped the CB, CD player (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/4/53dc3faa4aa28ed7ec04b47605830999.jpg/d2hhdCByYWRpbywgQ0IsIGNhbWVyYSBtb3VudD8=), roof lights (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/4/53ceafcbb2e3ef57e2a27508c2b9e8fa.jpg/QnllIEJ5ZSBsaWdodHMgYW5kIGFlcmlhbA==) and seat covers (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/4/480f8a04feecb799fde347b89d90178e.jpg/YnllIGJ5ZSBzZWF0IGNvdmVycw==) from the car.
I also stuck Challengers new number plate (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/4/61416110a4f5d7d1c0ed27d1ad0d39ad.jpg/VGhhdHMgdGhlIHdyb25nIHBsYXRlIQ==) on the front bumper ready for the swap round.

Not a bad days work.
All thats left to remove the suspension and thats it all finished.
I'll start fitting bits onto Challenger tomorrow.

Are you swapping the suspension from Big Blue to Challenger and vice versa?

If my experience is anything to go by - getting the original (?) shocks off of Challenger without damaging them could be tricky - on the front at least!

The problem is, the shock absorber is rubber mounted top and bottom (obviously!) which made it extremely difficult to undo the bottom mounting nut. Plus the fact that there is little to no room to get a spanner in there.

I didn't need to worry about the old shocks, so I used a chain-type oil filter remover to grip the shock absorber body. That, of course, pretty much trashed it

I don't know if there's another, non damaging, technique... :-k

Today i popped to Scorpion Racing to obtain new Decarbon bushes and sorted a great price for a new rear bumper and rock sliders with Colin (the proprioter). £475 + VAT, Sounds like a lot but its a good price.
I guess i'll be off to see them in a couple of weeks  \:D/
Got back about 2pm and set onto Challenger removed the front bumper (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/5523f1f5a621a1865b053ddd3c8870be.jpg/) and fitted the Scorpion one (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/15ba43e7f2c9f02cb12c599070debebb.jpg/). Then onto the Southdown steering guard (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/0dfafe1379702a48c6132214e280029e.jpg/), which i brought at Sodbury and after getting soaked (dam rain) and busted knuckles, the front end is finished!! (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/8873c74e05dc212a0b3c09e1d1ebf60c.jpg/)
Dont you just love Autumn!!

Neal (beast 5680) came over today and we made massive progress!!
We completely stripped Big Blue's suspension (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/5/1f14240d4b31e2c0e8d2667751796eb7.jpg/) and it looks well strange now (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/5/97910524bd2f1398c9af930e4f69b30e.jpg/), back to normal height!.
Then we set on Challenger (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/f23476fec0d4888d258f5fb9fe0dc9d3.jpg/).
We totally fitted all of the Scorpion suspension (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/ea102d3b1d259bb9b4c72e8f6c36c558.jpg/) to it!!
When we finished it was pitch black! (love those short days   )
We put some spacers under the roll bars too but i think i'm going to need bigger ones on the rear and i'll have to order some extended brake lines asap, the back ones are quite tight
Neal, you been fantastic.
Thanks a million bud!!
There's still loads to do
The story continues tomorrow......

Today i replaced the front speakers (because they were farting), Fitted the CB.
Nev (tufftee) came over today (thursday) and we fitted the bigger bigger bump stops (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/d3b10b359e0785668439f64c21c2cbe0.jpg/), fitted the front diff guard (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/bdb691d96c3260df6e30b3223c68f625.jpg/), removed the mud flaps (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/94c7eb9113a11eea0ad9ccc4d1857860.jpg/) and fitted the Devon 4x4 (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/bc5d3f4806aa196bc24c5863eb146256.jpg/) raised spare wheel carrier.
Sorted the wire for the CB (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/2/6fb04408578034a838cd0ca8db5b04ea.jpg/) aerial too.

also have you fitted cones on the rear springs?

looking good though 8)

Not if it's spaced ... and you don't need cones with an anti-roll bar, 'cos the suspension won't go that far - which is good and bad

That's my experience anyway :)

The day before the first outing

We went to Thames Tyres (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake22/4/e40eec0f5b55cd91967f69a941b0777e.jpg/) in Slough.
Ricky there always looks after Land Rovers.
Most other places wont swap 2nd hand tyres around  :x
So, we got the mud terrains (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/439336eebcc184746950747fd33bb477.jpg/) off the series and on to Challenger.
What a difference!! (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/dc0cb11ab1ca14365d673891892c552b.jpg/)
It looks like an off roader now! (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/35152ca379f99f7795f75bd23be89e26.jpg/)
Also i fitted the anti roll bar spacers, back (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/fe69cbbc5a512ab612410ebdd136de80.jpg/)and front (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/d86e976931ce53062408ccd56914c714.jpg/)
Then i cut the rear arches (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/483a414915f1b33645e9d32abf226be1.jpg/) and got the CB (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/e69d87dd939149c0a7d7e29d88025196.jpg/) working.
I fitted a 750 x 16 (dodgy) spare (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/6e035514359df5cc155ad1f972171163.jpg/), just in case (you never know)
ITS READY (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/3/89612b65f314cb6409d8bdf631e20178.jpg/)!!!!
I'm well pleased.
Bring on the mud!!!!

Well, the weeks over but work continues.
Phil (Turtle) came over to collect Big Blue
Pictures here (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/6/699e3accb4b3e020e4df420cfdcf0338.jpg/), here (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/6/229cf0679050a0adf2275c6a37a17426.jpg/) ,here (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/6/c545b4de25ba4cf39708243673d9f6aa.jpg/) and here (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/Big%20Blue/6/fe1f96882c933c3723f37d761b98360e.jpg/)
Sad day but progression is the way forward.
I then set about my snorkel.

Kate (SWMBO) went to Scorpion Racing today to buy my new rear bumper.
Had a phone call from her saying they'd sold out!
Apparently they hav'nt sold any for ages and 4 went out last week!
Typical.

So she bought me my rock sliders instead.
I guess that'll be the weekend job then.
I'll keep you all posted.

Today i fitted my light bar.
Looks great (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/5/a4c5333b15ba99809c481b6bdec8e5aa.jpg/) and soooo bright (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/jake7/5/24ca823dd6c119caeda6ea49c12ffcf5.jpg/)!
The 2 middle lights are now my fog lights and the outside ones are wired to my main beams.

Title: Building an off road Discovery! (now inc taking it apart!!)
Post by: Jake on November 09, 2005, 18:43:53
Probibly not.
Remind me never to flash the old bill out of a turning!

Regarding MOT's, not a problem.
1. my station is quite.....er...blind, in the way the look at cars
2. i could always remove the fuse to them.
 :D
Title: lights
Post by: colintandy on November 09, 2005, 19:45:15
they are not illegal as long as you can turn them off independently with a switch and dont use on a public road then yes the can be wired with the flasher

Strange one this
About a year ago i noticed a 110 Tomb Raider heading towards me.
All the standard kit fitted including 4 roof spots.
I flashed to say hi (twilight land rover wave   ) and he flashed back.
Blinding me with head lights and 4 roof spots.
So Land Rover special vehicles build them wired up to the main beam?
I guess it had a switch but obviously had left it on?
Strange.

It's not illegal to have roof mounted lights wired to the main beam and they don't have to be separately switched. Construction & Use Regs give specific information about dipped beam headlights e.g. max. 1200mm above ground level unless the vehicle structure makes this impossible, but there's nothing about optional main beam lights.

Have a look here (http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1989/Uksi_19891796_en_1.htm) at schedules 4 and 5 about 2/3rds of the way down.

Quite easy to fit although the instructions were a bit vague
(maybe i think all instructions should be like the Safari snorkel ones   )
They look great though.

Yes Gordon.
It tows a caravan just fine.
In fact, since using the south down set up with a long drop plate it tows better than before.
Maybe the ball is now at the correct height.
 :D

Now this thread has returned i will continue to update it.
Still on the list is a winch, rear bumper, cranked radius arms, extended brake lines and a double cardon prop.
Just need to raise so more funds first.

The correct height for a towball is 15" off the ground.

I'd reccomend the double cardon propshaft, I fitted one to mine last week and it cured the vibes!

Just a tip Jake....

The cones will work better if you fit them so that they are in-line with the vehicle...  i.e front-back and side-side rather than on the diagonal that you have.

Lots.
Lockers of some sort, a winch, maybe new wheels and tyres, maybe flared wheel arches.
There are plans a foot which will help me deciede which route to take this car.
I'll know before the new year.

Tim - as these are on my next shopping list from Devon (winch bumper is awsome by the way - never seen one in the flesh until mine arrived!) - how should they be fitted?

Jake - cracking motor, looking very nice indeed.

they should be fitted i believe so they are front to back in the same plane as the chassis rather than diagonal

I will be rotating them around soon.
Although, the only reason i put them that way was so that the D44 logo could be seen.
With them in the proper position it wont be seen.
Style over performance, thats me

That's right...  they will work as Jake has them... they just work a little better when lined up as above

When i changed the radiator i removed the plastic rad style plug from the thermostat housing (i was told it would realease the air bubble's???) and it fell apart.
I guess the heat got to it
I try'd to get out the remaining plug but i goosed up the thread
So i used the spare plastic plug from the old rad.
But, i would'nt go in because of the goosed thread.
So, as  tempoary bodge, i hammered it in.
(yes, with a hammer   )
I was in Devon recently so i went to see Tim and brought a nice new ally plug for the hole.
I did'nt want to kill the thread so i brought a tap to re-cut the thread. (1/2 BSP, £26)
My first go at tapping a thread went well and now its all sorted  \:D/
Now i can drive it without worring about the old plastic one flying out again

Thanks Beast & Tim.  Are they marked in any way to say which way they should be fitted?  Or does it all rely on how the vehicle sits?

If you look at the 'cone' it is made up of 2 arches which cross at a point.  Align one of these front-rear and one side-side.. (basically rotate through 45 degrees from where Jake has them pictured above).

Like I say, it's not essential.. they'll work in any orientation... but I couldn't resist the opportunity to nag Jake

I like the lights and the snorkel (apart from leaving a massive hole) is a very useful bit of protective kit
