Title: Some Advice please
Post by: MuddyMary on June 28, 2006, 17:52:37
Just looked at a 1992 Kplate Pajero LWB Diesel with 151000k on the clock.

Asking £2750 for it. Bodywork is clean so don't think it can possibly have been off-road, at least not much anyway.

Has electric windows, sunroof, Kenwood radio/cd player. Said on the back MMW (is that a model type I don't know)

Anyway, just after some thoughts please. Price ok? Too much, too little?

Drives fine but quite slow on acceleration but tbh didn't expect it to be fast.

Thanks everyone

 :D

MMC badge means its an import - as are all pajeros, not sure about mmw tho:(

There are a number of things to be sure of with them, try the nice folks at http://www.plcuk.co.uk  Lots of Mitsi owners on there who know more than I ever could about them. They don't bite even if some of them do look a little scary :)

If it doesnt have an air scoop on the bonnet it's a 2.5 tdi, they are sluggish (i assume its auto) manuals are a bit quicker on acceleration, and 2.8's are better still, there are petrol versions.
the price seems about right if its immaculate, a swb would be about the £1750 range and lwb's are about a grand more expensive.
If its been maintained it will be a reliable vehicle, ask for details of services etc. especially when the cambelt was changed. hth.

Thanks. It is the 2.5tdi as didn.t have anything on the bonnet. It had a service in January and had all the filters changed or cleaned but they were listed. Didn't say anything about cambelt. Is that easy to check as there was no other history?

Thanks

Not unless its stated on a sticker somewhere, would certainly have it changed to be on the safe side.

There is a major issue with the crankshaft pulley on the 2.5 engine, Many were fixed but not all. With the engine running look for any sign of wobble on the bottom pulley. Any wobble negotiate hard or turn and walk.

With no history of a cambelt change, bank on having it done ASAP. round here that would cost about £250 so start by negotiating 300 off the price for that alone. It is almost impossible to tell visually how old a cambelt really is, even if you do strip off all the covers. There may be a sticker on the cover, or maybe elsewhere under the bonnet with a change date & mileage, but personally it is something I would have done regardless, failed cambelt=new engine near as dammit :(

The MMC on the back door is simply Mitsubishi Motor Company, nothing to do with imports etc, the 2.5 is quite gutless the 2.8 is quicker but much
thirstier - the V6 petrol is probably the best model quick and fairly good on fuel, think you should offer 2,350 for the one your looking at, good luck with your buy-nice motors easy to live with ,and a certain presance on the road,

UK spec Shoguns dont't have MMC badge but Pajeros do and all Pajeros are imports - otherwiuse they are Shoguns

2.5 has timing belt and pulley issues to watch for but if no history allow for changing timing belt, balance belt and pulley & bolt etc. Change is a must at 90,000 km.

Pulley alone is £175 plus VAT so bargain hard.

Sluggish ?
My SWB didn't used to be slow (is atm) but this can be indication of other problems such as injectors need changing (every 50,000 km), turbo not working, worn diesel pump seals or blocked exhaust.

For that age I would aim for £2,500 with belts, pulley and bolt changhed.

Hth

Btw -- normally a wealth of info - service times and job time rates on www.pajerouk.co.uk but the site is down atm

ALL Mitsi 2.5td s are gutless compaired with most other engines of this type! just take a look at any group test involving the 2.5 Mitsi motor,
I have been driving a 2006 2.5 L 200 its just all show no go,sluggish is the kindest way to describe it, the turbo works the exhaust is clean and the handbrake is off,          :lol:which is a pity because its a nice motor-think the petrol version the Triton? is the way to go-i am looking to sell my 2.5td and go for a V6 pet,

What did you buy today Joe?
If your talking about the pulley and bolt, if its an original bolt, and put back in properly (i.e. loctited in) and correctlt toqued, there isnt a problem.
Apparently new bolts are fractionally longer and dont grip flywheel correctly, and should be shortened to fit.
Breaking the pulley is expensive but if taken off correctly this shouldnt happen, a hammer is not the correct way of removal!!.

gutless engines of this type?
Reasonable off road, reasonable on road, not brilliant at either.
Tell me what is?

For comparison, 0-60 for SWB auto 2.5 is 15.9 seconds.

Slower than this and there will be a reason.

And re the pulley problem, shortening the bolt by 3mm is recomended but with mine it was the key failed not the bolt.

Change together with belts at 90,000 km and wont be a problem.
