Title: Frontera reverse light problems
Post by: Barry Scott on August 21, 2005, 16:45:01
OK, so when I got my Frontera, the reverse lights were controlled by a switch hanging off the dash, obviously the old loght failed so the previous owner bodged it.

Now I have purchased a new reverse light switch(after testing the old one with a multimeter and finding it always gives out the on signal) and after a lot of messing about, fitted it.

Guess what, reverse lights are alway on!!!!!

Whatever gear it is in the reverse light stays on, any ideas?

It is common on alot of cars, that when the reverse switch is old, it will stick. It is a small plunger type switch, wwhich when you select reverse, pushes the plunger in and make a contact.  When the switch gets all the old gammy oil round it it will stick on, giving you your Always On Prob.  Change the switch (Approx £10) Had the same prob on my vectra, or take the switch out and clean it up. It might work. :D

Changed the switch, no joy :(

I left the word "switch" out of my first post.

Then you may need to pack out the switch with washers. They dont necessarally screw all the way home. Try putting it in gear, and screwing it in until the light comes on the take it out of gear and see if they go out.

Also have you tried it with the switch connected but not in the box??

The othe thing to check, is have you got a feed down both of the wires that go to the switch??

Just tried it out of the box, without pressing the ball of the switch in, the lights are on.  when I push it in the lights go off  :?

I would say that you need to adjust it then with a washer. Either that ofr you have the wrong switch.

Reverse lights aren't compusary.  Not part of the MOT.  Why bother, mines never worked?
