Title: Need a new exhaust!
Post by: JumboBeef on September 04, 2011, 07:45:40
My 91 RRC V8 auto LPG has just failed it's MOT on the exhaust.  It is blowing on the down pipies but to be fair the whole thing needs replacing.  The vehicle is completely standard and is a 'keeper'.

Do I:

replace everything but the manifolds in mild steel?
replace everything but the manifolds in stainless steel?

Should I replace the manifolds at the same time (someone once said to me that was the the quickest way to increase performance on a standard V8).

I would like a bit more V8 noise but I do not want anything boy racer.

Any suggestions please!

Thanks.

Stainless sports sytem then, I have ( I think) a Rimmer's one on my LSE.  Increased MPG, I think the cats were blocked, sounds ok and gets rid of the downpipe galkset which were always blowing.

Fit it with a set of the P38 tripple layer gaskets, not the compostie ones.

Also the double S ones are well made, I fitted those to 2 TDis.

I fitted a double S stainless sports exhaust to my old 3.5 carb (less manifolds), improved perfomance, economy and sounded great.
I'm going to fit one to my off-roader (with manifolds) when I have the time and money.
Although the exhaust - Y piece back - is stainless the manifolds are mild steel. So you may want to ceramic coat or paint before fitting. Mild steel is less prone to cracking with the extremes of temperature a manifold is subject to.
Double S advertise their sports exhaust for a 3.9 for

Thanks for the replies.

I have decided to keep the same manifolds, replace the downpipes with standard ones and then fit a single box SS Powerflow system from there back.

Close on

I have allways found that a stainless system ruins that V8 sound we all know and love, makes it sound tinnie but fit a Janspeed mild steel system with those lovely flowing tubed headers and wow real V8 burble without the boyracer noise in your ear and nice smooth power throughout the speed range, JMHO,

True that SS sounds tinny, but once it's sooted up it's ok.  the longer stroke engines don't have the "V8" burble, the 4.2 being the smoothest exhaust note (with the possible exception of my LSE) because of the increased valve pules overlap.
