On a cold start my car wont change out of 1st gear for about a minute of driving and its started to make a weird screeching noise when changing at high rpm (kickdown, about 5000rpm)
friends have said i need to change the gearbox oil, is that all it is??

hi dave i had this once on a rover 800 and that wouldnt change gear for about 1 mile i replaced the gearbox but then i was told its the tourqe converter but plz dont hold me to this

If its a ZF auto box they are prone to the governor becoming sticky in there housing, I bet its fine when warmed up? a gearbox oil and filter change may sort it out but I would not hold my breath. As for the screeching just check that all the drive belts are in good nick and tight.

Give it a go; try it three or four times.
Fact is that if you don't sort it with oil and filters it's probably going to cost you, it has to be worth changing it and flushing it a couple of times before you commit shed loads of cash?

Dave_, is that a Land Rover in your sig or a UFO sighting?

change the oil and filter...did that on mine and a quite a few strange things suddenly disappeared.
the screeching...have you got aircon and is it on...mine does that sometimes at high revs!
(you rarely reach 5000rpm in any gear other than first, and it may not slip the belt at lower revs)

Mine does 5,000 in 3rd, not any other gear but I agree the screeching could be an easy fix.
As for the box it's probably suffering from neglect, that was a £40,000 car when new with servicing costs to match but when they get to £2,000 the owners often can't be bothered.
You will need to swap the oil a couple of times to get it thoroughly changed as you can't drain the torque converter but the first change, with a new filter should show a difference and if it does swap the oil again a month later.
