Title: Series 1 clutch issues...
Post by: damian t on December 05, 2006, 13:58:03
'ello all, I'm havingh an issue with the clutch on my Series 1 in that I can't engage any gears anymore!  With the engine on, 1st, 2nd, and reverse just grind, waking the neighbours, with the engine off gear selection is perfect..... but then I can't drive anywhere!

If I put her in 1st/2nd and start the engine, then she lurches forward and crawls in gear.

Is this the end of my clutch, or is there a way I can adjust it?

Cheers,

Damian

Have you checked the hydaulic fluid levels?

EDIT:  Doh!  Series 1s don't use hydraulic clutches.

Yes, unfortunately sounds like the clutch is stuck.  Try driving it in gear with the brakes on, and see if that frees the clutch up.

I've had the same problem with my s3 and as per advice on here I unstuck it by starting it in 1st (low range) driving as fast as possible and slamming on the clutch & brake at the same time.... the clutch is probably stuck to the flywheel.

Okay, driving it in gear with the brakes on didn't seem to work, I'll try Matt's advice tomorrow.

Cheers...

If its been sitting a while a stuck clutch is very likely.

Bizarrely I got mine started after about 8 years the other weekend to find the the clutch was perfect.  Strange!  That's the first time that's ever happened.

I like the fly across the yard and jump on the brake and clutch method, its brutal but usually eventually does the trick!
