Title: 200tdi into a series3
Post by: ian_s on March 18, 2006, 20:16:02
i have finally aquired a 200tdi engine, from a defender 110, and I know some people here have done this conversion. so i have a few questions

1: will the standard series3 radiator do? mine is in good condition, and was re cored not long ago.

2: will it go straight on my engine mounts?

3: i beleive it bolts straight to the series3 gearbox, but what clutch does it use?

4: what the *&$% am i gonna do for an exhaust?

Any other advice is also welcomed
cheers
Ian

exhaust id say a 90 Tdi one SHOULD fit.. radiator...  go for a 90 one again as these seem larger

the engine will bolt straight onto the series bell housing after you have removed one o the studs on the engine. the engine mounts off the series bolt straight onto the tdi. The un starts when it comes to the radiator and exhaust.I will give Stanton boy a wake up call and get him to PM you the details as i work with him every day!!

hope this helps Neil :)

WOW its that easy to fit a 200 into a series
was expecting a hell of a lot more than that..so really main stumbling points are exhaust and rad.. well exhaust is a simple (ish ) fix, and i presume a 90 td rad would do the job, may have to 90 the front end tho'

Stanton boy kept the origional series front,he fitted the disco rad and intercooler. other than that it was just sorting out the electrics and plumbing!!
When we did his we took the standard diesel engine out and fitted the 200tdi lump in in one night, it was the other bits that took the time!! If i remember correctly he used the series pressure plate and the disco friction plate, though i could be wrong :)

thanks neil, i remember talking to Chris about this a while ago when i bought a diff off him. his is slightly different cos it were a disco engine, whereas i have a defender one. but the theory is the same.

someone might be getting me parts of the exhaust off a 90 200tdi, which i can cut and shut to make it fit.
the worst part is the gearbox, as mine went titsup today. at least it happened before i put it all back together with the new engine

Defender engine is an easier to fit than a disco engine, because of the exhaust, but that is all.  All of the other fittings, intercooler, radiator, gearbox mountings and engine mountings are the exact same procedure for both the disco and the defender engine.

I have a word document that i have compiled, if you want a copy pm me your email address and i will send it to you.

mite be missing something here, but you need a tdi rad, for the intercooler,
i would have thought that it would be easyier for you to convert it to a  defender front, more room for the rad then
that is what i did when i fitted a 200tdi into a friends series, which incidently some one on this forum owns now, just havent seen it around yet  :(
just to help out...its a big green land rover  :P

with a 200tdi in..not many around so should narrow it down a bit  :P

The reason that i wanted to keep the series front is that i actually prefer it to the defender front, but for no other reason.  Like you say it would fit easier if you convert to a defendr front, but this has other implications, like by series has a winch onn the front which is set nicely between the front wings. If i had converted to a defender front then i would have to mount the winch further forward and that would ruin the excellent approch angle offered by a series landrover.

there is plenty of room for the 200tdi radiator in with the standard series front end
if you look at a tdi 90 the cowling for the fan is about a foot deep.
i'm with StantonBoy on the frontend, i much prefer the look of the series3 compared to a 90.
I have been told that i might be able to keep the standard series 3 rad, but i would have to find an intercooler to fit in a different place, or i can fit the 110 rad and cooler unit.

the engine change is on hold for now as some parts are broken on it
