After having Land Rovers for many , many years - I'm thinking of having a change, and buying a Wrangler.
Mainly because I would like a soft top, and "safe" seats in the back for the kids.
Problem is, I know nothing about them am I doing the right thing??
Are they full time 4wd? do they have hi/low box? do they have locking diffs?
Are parts easy to find at a decent price?
Any particular model to look for / or avoid?
What should I be looking for when viewing? :-k
I'm probably looking to spend 5 - 6k - what should I get for this price?
I've seen a 'Rubicon' advertised, what is this?
Sorry for all the questions, thanks in advance for any help ... :lol:
PS - anyone got one for sale, or swap for a modded 90.

As with any 4x4 if you're going to do offroad sites it will be cheaper to buy one already kitted up. Parts are good - ebay - club sites - etc.
TJ's have coil springs (f&r)-round headlights. Go for the 4.0 ltr not 2.5ltr as the 4.0ltr does a couple of mpg less but you won't be changing gear as much - and the 4.0 sounds great!!
If i were you i would try and find a 'mud-club' member near you who would take you out in one before you buy one.
Get one with a hard top & soft top and as many bits as poss (if you get tj half doors i'll ave um!! [-o<)

4 litre..unmodded so you can get tod use it and work ou what mods you want
Basics are front/rear recovery points transfer case skip plate and 31 x 10.5 R 15 Muds will fit maybe with the steering stops adjusted which is easys
A fuel tank skid plate should come early in the wish list which is pretty endless.. :afro: :dance:

Get a ready modded one - £5/6K will get you a good one :D

**part-time 4wd and full time 2wd, no locking diffs
Are parts easy to find at a decent price?
** ebay is always a good source or lighthouse jeep for good prices and next day delivery

**the main thing is wear and tear. yes they do rust so look in the general normal places like on a landy. look for offroad damage etc

I too had landrovers for quite a while too,and i needed rear seats for my kids too so I bought a 4litre cherokee and all I can say is "wow" a lot of of car for the money and they are awesome offroad with all that power,all you need is a decent set of tyres (31,s) and a decent lift (3") and thats it!!!....obviously you can spend loads of coin but you dont need to really..........GO FOR IT.......and find out for yourself,you wont regret it, I can quite honestly say I wont have any more landrovers again!!!.........................and while you are looking around for one,dont dismiss the cherokee(xj)same engine and a lovely smooth auto and you can trick em up :D :D

Yep, gotta second BK's comments. He is my mate and we both had Landy 90's, I went to a SWB 3.0 V6 Shogun and he bought his Jeep which now I"ve seen it in action I wish I had bought one instead of the Shogun. His is 2 years younger than mine and he paid £1500 less for it, so it proves that you get a lot of motor for your dosh. Only thing I would recommend is to get it Gassed like BK has done as they are well thirsty :) :)

Underside tank you need a lift, boot you loose space

Who gives a flying flip about boot space when youre doin 15 to the gallon and paying 50p a litre instead of £1.16 a litre.....just buy a roof rack!!!! or get a vertical toroidial tank!!!......oh and thanks Mark :D :D

Mine has rear underslung tank but has a 4mm thick steel guard to protect it and I"ve had no problems with clearance when offroading. You lot can just keep paying through the nose for your fuel while me & BK laugh our dangly bits off at you when we are filling up with lovely cheap gas :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

I definitely agree with that advice about trying one before you spend time hunting for one. I've spoken to a couple of people like you who really fancied bucking the trend and bought a wrangler only to find out it's not as good an all-rounder as the LR they were used to. Especially towing, which I found odd given the short rear overhang should make it ideal :-k.
Anyway, I'm not going to come on the Jeep forum and trash them, they sell enough so they must be doing something right, just don't rush into it and if someone offers you the chance to try one, snatch their hand off.
