The DVLA have a web page that should be able to tell you if the car is currently Taxed, for the life of me I cant find the link but if you get it that should go some way to confirm the car is still on the road.
If I find the link I will post asap.
Good luck with your search
Edit, whoops should have read above post

Just had a quick look on the DVLA but i cant get the link to work on here .I cant work out if its taxed until the 1/12/08 or thats when it needs tobe sorn again :-k would be nice if it was still on the road .

If I remember correctly it should tell you when the next tax is due.

DVLA website will tell you about tax
http://www.askmid.com/askmid.aspx will tell you if your own vehicle is on the insurance database. Not allowed to check other vehicles ;)
MoT checker:
You may use this site to obtain information about a test on a vehicle in which you have a legitimate interest. For example, you are the owner, registered keeper or are about to buy the vehicle.

The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for E549 GJX are:

Year of Manufacture 1988
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2800CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available

The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry.

Seems that it's SORNed at the moment. Cylinder capacity says 2.8 litres, so looks like it may have had a bit of an engine change at some stage too...
