Title: Anybody know a good welder?
Post by: RR Paul on October 13, 2004, 21:55:20
When I got home tonight, i noticed my sill (well whats left of it)  was hanging down!
Looks like i need to replace them. Any ideas or advice who can do it (cheap!)

That happy, smiling face I see in the mirror every morning.  Shame you don't live closer really.
Take my advice, go to nightschool and learn to weld, then buy yourself a half-decent MIG.  That way you'll know the jobs done properly and to your satisfaction.

Better still, buy the MIG, then go to nightschool, let them show you how to use it!

One with variable wire speed an if possible variable current, I bought one with no variable wire speed and only two current settings. It's bloomin hard work.
Good penetration is the secret.

About £80 on ebay. It doesn't weld car bodywork very well but makes grills for a barby quite nicely using 6mm bar.

After todays episode with a welder, I felt like using self tappers and rivets, NOTHING would go right, somebody been screwing round with the mig unit, would not play right, thought ok, gas the thing up, ran out of oxygen half way through the job

 :x  :x  :x

Sod it, gave up went home sulking, parked up the vehicle until next week, then try again

Oxygen? With a MIG?  The 'I' stands for 'Intert', you know.  :o

But seriously, keep messing about with bits of scrap.  It's not a bad way to learn.  Sure, you may end up spending quite a bit on gas and wire at first, and you're bound to forget to pull the mask down at least once (been there, done that, got arc eye), but things can only get better.

Yes Huw

Bad choice of words, Welding wise is no prob for me, been doing it too many years, just been off for a while and the mig gear had been messed up, not got the time to sort it out this afternoon, other mot jobs to do

Not been there to keep an eye on the oxy gear, and somebody had used the reserve oxygen bottle, and not re-ordered a replacement

Unfortunately now coughing up golf balls again, looks like my chest was not fully recovered from this bug

Just a bit frustrating, as ramp time is hard to get, and wasted it sorting other things out that should have already been done

Ah well always another time
