Title: Oily Mess
Post by: Andy the Landy on October 31, 2004, 22:57:09
On the way to playing out today we noticed oil coming into the cab through the bulkhead   Stopped at Hartshead Moor services and lifted bonnet to find an oily mess   Nice Mr RAC man came to piggyback us home :D

Earlier in the week I had been checking all bolt tightness underneath and 4 sump bolts needed tightening. When we got back home I took the oil filter out and realised there was no O ring on the top housing :!:  ( rollockin for the garage that didnt fit it is tomorrow)
Anyway, O ring is now fitted and engine degreased and all appears to be OK ( A good blast over towards Holmfirth seems to confirm it must have been the oilfilter O ring) but is there anywhere else I should check just to be on the safe side
Cheers Chaps

P.S. if you aint invested in AA or RAC I would definately recommend it. My membership has paid for itself with one incident

Sorry to hear about that Andy.

However a similar thing happened to me when my motor went in
for service, I drove it out of my garage the day after only to find
it had dumped a load of oil on the garage floor..  Called
the garage when it happened and they turned up in 15 mins with
a low loader and a curtisy car, The out come was the oil filter had
fallen off.. [-X  Won't Name and shame but I don't use them anymore.

Normally I try to do as much maintenance myself to save dosh, but didnt have time to do it, so farmed it out.

Lesson learned.

I only took my cav into a garage 4 times, and 4 times it was b******d up and I had to put it right!
Rangie has only been in once, oh dear, oh dear oh dear.....(shakes head).

DIY is good in one sense, if you do it right its a good feeling

The down side is if you do it wrong, you've only yourself to blame :?

I had mine dealer serviced for 2 years after I bought it. More for the warranty than anything else.
First service I did myself it was virtually impossible to undo the gearbox filler. I don't think they'd ever undone it or had over tightened it.

At least when you do it yourself you know it's been done.
