Title: Series 3 rebuild
Post by: Andy the Landy on August 12, 2005, 22:40:52
Can someone point me in the right direction please - at the moment doors wont shut (only  3mm out) should I be looking at pulling the bulkhead forward or moving the rear tub back or both and whats the best way to tackle either.
Cheers

Is the 3mm all the way down the door ?

It may be that the bulkhead is just leaning back a bit.

There is usually a bit of adjustment available in the door hinges.. slacken them off and see if they move.
Is there a roof on the vehicle ?  The roof and windscreen both add a bit of support to the bulkhead, keeping it forward.

3mm is at top of door (overlap onto sides)
I've tried the door hinges and the striker plate and they are still slightly out. The roof is on but only bolted above the windscreen and I've tried moving it forward, but only the winscreen seems to move. I've even slackened off the bulkhead to chassis plates - will loosening the tie bars be of any use
Cheers for quick response :D

is the gap smaller nearer the rear of the door too?? If so, it would suggest the hinge mount isnt square with the floor, cusing it to tilt back a little. Over a full door length, 3mm aint alot to be out of square.

The 3mm is when you try and shut the door - the door top is overlapping the van sides by 3mm, not a lot , but still wont shut :?

I was meaning the rear of the door along the bottom edge. This gap should be pretty even along its length. If it isnt, then it would suggest the bulkhead may not be square

Ahhhhhhh - didnt check that - just saw the overlap at the top and concentrated on that, will have a look tomorrow :D

lets hope it is that simple :) If it is,then I would guess the bulkhead needs straightening a little. (or the floor needs bending back - sorry, being silly now, go for the bulkhead option :) )

I am assuming the gap between the door and bulkhead/windscreen is about the same from top to bottom?? This again would indicate bulkhead not square

Think its the top of the bulkhead that may need to come forward and the bottom stay where it is - if that makes sense :?

Think I've sussed it now :D . O/S door now shuts as well as its ever done. Discovered that the striker on N/S has previously been plated so will move the door handle over accomodate the plate thickness
