Post by: beast5680 on August 21, 2005, 19:23:40
having read this months lro and seen the bloke who built himself a 6 wheel landy, and having seen 6 wheel rangies, does anyone know of a disco version of this?

Yes I do!!!!

Its actaully a disco with a 100 Hi-cap back.  Its not finsihed and has fluctuated between disco and RR for a while so I dont know what the final product wil be, all I know is that its a tough thing to do!!!!

Carrying/towing capacity.  Or maybe &50 for a set of 4 wheels isn't enough for some folks.

1) Extra volume for loading - eg an ambulance
2) Extra payload - can carry more weight
3) Better weight distribution for off-road transport - lower ground pressure - although tracks are generally better
4) Just because it's a laugh

I'd always fancied a 6wd Range Rover, but ended up with the 6x6 101...

exactly i can see why in an ambulance or as in the 101 military usage, but for recreation? H
ey dont get me wrong im not knocking it but when most people are trying to attain maximum fun for smallest outlay 6 wheels seems to be a logistical nightmare.

I refer you to answer (4) above.  :)

Out of the two 6x6 101s I'm aware of, neither of them were built for military use.

i,m not really looking for whether it was for recreational or not just being curious as to see if there was ever any built be it factory or diy build, i got to wondering after seeing the latest LRO where a guy has built his own 6 wheeler for a trip to africa and a friend of mine has a rangerover fire appliance 6 wheeler, being that a range rover and a disco share parts i thought it would be a fairly easy conversion to make a 6 wheeler rangie into a disco and unusual as well

thermidor, answer 4 is justification for just about anything.
You could do it but to make it look good you would have to be exceptionally good with bodywork.

Hopefully one day as an overland expedition vehicle, but for now as a toy.

The rear axles are a bit far apart on mine, it's true - you get a lot of tyre scrub.  But it's a bit late to change that :)

In a river running off the world's third largest icecap (Vatnajokull), in Iceland.

Vehicle photos (http://www.lobsternet.org/photos/iceland-landrover/index.php)
General photos (http://www.lobsternet.org/photos/iceland2005/index.htm)

I can't recommend it highly enough.

Some of our group are now considering a winter trip, so I may get back to you on that!  The only downside is the endless supermarket puns when you get back

Photos look fantastic, what kind of costs were involved?
Winter really is harsh, the locals all drive on studded tyres on the road. We went with arctic expierience and visited loads of stuff around husavik. Also went skidooing, mental fun. The heated grips were that warm i kept having to turn them off!

For 44 people, somewhere north of 50 grand

I think our ferry bills ran to about 20 grand!

Mr Thermidorthelobster, may I ask what colour your 101 is painted in? Its rather fetching. Also I think I'd feel safer touring the outback in one of those 101's - talk about substantialr.

I'm not quite sure, but check here (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=11065) for further info.  There's a big tub of the stuff in one of the lockers so I'll check.

I have to say, there are some grrrrreat modified photos up above - good work everybody.  If anybody's in the mood for doing an 8x8 101  :D

Hi dan, the most important thing to getting good results i've found it to pick the right photo to start with. make sure the background is either quite simple or something like trees and bushes so that you can use the clone (no it's nothing to do with Star Wars) tool to blend it all in.
