Title: Hybrid Range Rover Land Rover VOSA advice

Welcome to every one in the forum and just to introduce myself

I have watched a number of Kit, 4 x 4, Restoration build programs on numerous occasions recently, in particular a “4 x4 is Born recently and are keen to start a Off road 4x4 that can be used legally on the road as well.

Over the years I have built a few kits namely  a JBA Falcon, also a single seat semi off road er  and extensively modified a Morris Minor and a VW Beetle, I was considering building a off road 4x4 kit by the Name of Traka using one of my ageing Range Rover Classics as my single seat off road er but I changed my mind when I saw a "4 x 4 is born" and would rather go down this route having what basically looks like a Land Rover Defender rather than a roll cage on wheels sat on my front drive that would no doubt attract attention of neighbours and kids.

I was in the process of sourcing panels etc from a 4x4 specialist when he basically poured cold water on the use of the Range Rover chassis saying that I will encounter problems  with VOSA registering and taxing the vehicle, even though I have owned the donor Ranger  Rover myself for 10 years, also the same vehicle is not tax exempt being a 1987 model.  The 4x4 specialist said it would be far better to use the 110 chassis and remove 10” from the mid chassis, welding in angle sections by drilling a series of holes then plug welds before finally over plating the joints. Please can you pass your comments on VOSA and method outlined as the specialist suggests your program could be outdated by VOSA regulations.

I would say you are better asking this question in the modified vehicals area of the site ...

there are a good few lads with all the info you'll need...

and if you do go ahead with it remember we like photos  ;)

The whole area around the SVA is fairly complex, much has been written: do a google search SVA test land rover.  Bear in mind that Mark Evans will have spent the best part of £20k giving birth to that 4x4.
