Title: Sankey History
Post by: lwb109 on September 28, 2004, 21:09:12
Does anyone on the list know how I can go about finding the date of
manufacture / entry into service of my Sankey trailer ?

My insurers would like the information and so would I.

I have been able to read some data from the plate underneath :-
Vehicle No. 66AW32        Chassis No. 74
AVC 28550790                 Contract No. WV11134
NSN 2330998067070

Best wishes

Jim Lester :?:

Hmm.......... that would be very interesting.

The details that I have got off my plate are as follows:

Trailer Cargo, 3/4 Ton, 2WH, Sankey.

No. 2361 Cont. No. WV.11134

Vehicle No. 25 GB 04

Chassis No. 427

Code No. 2855,0790

Ces No. 33984.

Be interesting to know what they all mean  :?:

Think I've the same manual Ed , and your right no mention of vehicle ID on there  :?:

The must of all been logged at some point and each number must mean something  :?:

I have done before now had a quick look round some military forums but it all seems to be vehicles and not trailers  :(

Sankey's aren't Land Rover though  :?:

Would Gaydon have that info  :?:

Who actually made them originally, and then supplied them to the military  :?:

The company was formerly Joseph Sankey Ltd who were eventually incorporated into the multi-national conglomerate GKN Sankey who have a manufacturing base in Telford (Shropshire)

It might be worth contacting the GKN Press Office, Archives, Public Relations & explaining what you want.
Companies with military contracts usually have decent archives (unless it's really 'hush-hush' stuff)

As an aside; have you tried putting this on 'landrovernet.com'???
Bob Morrison might be able to help - if he's around

Once upon a time you could have asked the museum of army transport in Beverley but in typical fasion this once excellent museum has been run down over the years and now closed.  I don't know where, if at all, the exhibits and records have gone.
