Title: Water Leak ... Which gasket?
Post by: Cassillis on June 12, 2007, 09:23:43
Morning all, 1991 Disco 1 has developed a water leak. The leak is sufficient to empty the expansion tank on any runs over 20 miles. I have had a look and it appears to be coming from where the timing belt housing meets the block, under the thermostat housing and adjacent to the alternator.

Any ideas what may have gone Kaput and how involved to repair??

Thanks

can't remember for sure whether there is a core plug near the inlet manifold. For the sake of four or five bolts i'd remove the inlet manifold so you can get a better look.

hope this helps

It looks like it's either the intermediate gasket or the core plug close to it. You will need to remove the whole timing case to get at it, so quite a bit of work to replace a few pence worth of parts. Best to replace the core plug and gasket at the same time to prevent possible further grief. There are plenty of threads relating to replacing a 200TDi timing belt, which you will need to refer to in order to do this job yourself. There's no real special tools needed to this - just a torque wrench, breaker bar, and a decent set of tools. If the crank pulley is having none of it, then a simple extractor can be made up to remove it.
