Title: Hiclone
Post by: Big Rich on May 01, 2004, 10:23:45
I have just fitted a pair of Hiclones to my discovery 200 tdi.  8)  I think they have improved my power (at junctions and towing). I wonder thought how much fuel will they really save  :?:

Has anyone else fitted them and what do they think about their perfomance?

This is just me but I must confess to be being very wary and sceptical of these kind of gadgets that claim improve fuel / bhp / emissions etc..

I always think if a bolt on device was that good that the manufacturers of engines/cars,  who are investing £mills in development to squeeze that little bit extra % mpg etc , would fit it from standard.

But I do hear from buyers of these things on forums/mags that they apparently work ?   Would reserve judgement I spose.

Two questions, 1, Am I right in saying these things "straighten" out the airflow?  2, if that's the case, how does this improve economy, BHP etc? I can't say I really understand the science behind it. I know some competition engines have the inlet manifolds shot blasted to give a slightly erratic surface to improve "swirl" surely these things have the opposite effect? :?  :?

As far as I can tell they swirl the air entering the Turbo and also swirl the are as it comes fron the intercooler.

I have had them on my truck now for a week or two and must say I have noticed the turbo kick's in quicker.    As for emissions and fuel time will tell.

I'VE GOT THEM FITTED AND I RECKON 5-10% INCREASE IN FUEL ECONOMY ACROSS THE DRIVING RANGE.
I ALSO THINK THERE'S A SLIGHT POWER INCREASE LOWER DOWN, BUT YA AINT GONNA GET WHIPLASH :!:
P.S. HOW BIG ARE YOU RICH ? COS I'M GENERALLY REGARDED  AS BEING PRETTY ENORMOUS (EXCEPT BY THE WIFE    ).

Nah, not just you Dave.  I think there's alot of us in the same boat.

It's like that guy you see at all the shows selling the 'magnets' that go over the fuel lines to increase combustion efficiency.  Always lots of interest, but not much money changing hands (BTW they were the target of a trading standards enquiry in the USA a couple of years back !!)

Somebody should do a proper study on all this wonder products to put us all out of our misery.

i think it would be an idea to let someone drive the same vehicle and not tell them which one has been improved and see if its spotted

if not then its psychological more than anything else

but if they can actually do tests on the vehicle with and without them and publish the results im more than willing to bow my head and admit it works!

ive recently bought (but not fitted) a k&n filter for the car and wonder whether i will notice the difference (the wallet certainly did!)
