think my alternator is on its way out, so want to upgrade to 100amp+, is there a straight swop for a 200tdi. was thinking off a Disco with aircon?
-
ive got a 300tdi disco 100amp alternator fitted to my 90, ill get a pic when it stops raining
-
Rain must be bad down there
I would be interested in seeing this also, when it stop raining of course :-#
-

i used 2 tensionor plates so i could adjust it abit more if need and where the alternator was mounts upside on a 300 disco which makes the casing in the wrong position, but u can just make a soild bracket that goes all the way round to the top point on the alternator
-
oh and btw the way ull have to upgrade the 2 larger brown wires that run to the starter motor
-
cheers for that..

That was my next question, I have a good alterantor off my V8 RRC which could fit, but the wiring did my nut as on the 200tdi it plugs on to the back IIRC

Mmm :-k :-k
That's started me thinking along the same lines with my Td5.
However, the (presumed) 60Amp has no problems, so it is worth faffing around?
(I have no intention of fitting a winch, or twin batteries)
-
I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure Td5 has 120A alternator as standard. Maybe somebody who knows can confirm..?

and that pulley just fitted on as is?

yes, why?

yes, why?
just wondering for future reference.

Me too, I have a S/H alternator from a serpentine engine and the 80 amp unit on Blue is playing up again (I recenlty had it rebuilt) so I'm thinking of swapping it. My only reservation is the 80 amp unit can shred a new belt in an afternoon, so how bad will a 100 amp unit be :-.

Use better belts
ive been running a 150A on my 200tdi & the belt has lasted 4 months, changed it simply for reliability as im doing the TFC nect weekend
i use genuine gates belts, 13mm wide in 10mm pulleys
-
Yes I've found using a 13mm belt rather than a 10mm has made a huge differnece, though you get a bit less choice of sizes.
Is yours ok when you are winching too Mike? I can't imagine a higher load on the alternator than that, except perhaps winching in the dark.
-
i just picked up used RR 3.9 alternator, going to have a play about with that when i get a chance..
-
I've just done the same, my 80 amp was playing up and spares are getting hard to source.
Youshould find the later Vogue SE had a 100 amp unit driven by a multi vee belt direct form the crank. You can swap the front pulley with the 65 amp standard RRC alternator and it pretty much lines up.
-
yeah thats the plan
-
all done, fitted straight on just had to change the pulley and the connections, getting a nice 14-14.2v , bargain for £18 off eblag looks like new

Can't fault that, did it bolt straight on? I wasn't sure if the TDi alternator was upside down, the lugs being the other way up.
-
if you can hold of till tommorow i will take some pics of my twin alternator set up
-
yep straight on....
