Title: AT Tyres for SWB CSW
Post by: Ser3 J on September 22, 2006, 21:31:25
Hey there

I want to replace the crossply tyres on my newly acquired SWB with some AT Tyres - can anyone advise on the correct/best size?  The rims are standard and also new so I don't really want to replace them as they suit the vehicle...

Anyone still use/need crossplies? (7.5x16 I think) 4 have done 500 miles and the 5th is brand new!!!

Thanks in advance

If you're not doing very high mileages then I can suggest Colway All Terrains.  Same tread as BFG AT. :)

Rich,

Thanks for the advice  :)   I was just going to get BFG as 'the best' but I will only do about 3000 miles a year and what with the new tyre laws (5 years max) then these may be just the ticket.

Its the size i'm unsure of.  I dont want to cut my panels or do any lifting.

Its a 2.25 '81 CSW if that makes any difference - though im hankering after either a 200TDi or the HCR(?) 2.8 bored out version with ported head etc

Edited 4 speling

7.50 or 235/85 are the most common sizes that are fitted. Other sizes would fit, but these are the most suitable for the vehicle.

Just as a note, the standard Series transmission has a hard enough time with the torque of the 200TDi.  A 2.8 will just blow everything apart within days.

yep as rich said 7.50x16 is the old imperial size.

you could also fit 235/85R16, or 265/70R16
31x10.5R15 would also fit.

BFG AT's are great but with your low mileage and the 5 yr thing its a waste...a set of BFG AT's should easy do 60k plus.

Look around, General Grabber TR's are pretty good, i think they come as standard on new defenders.

Guys,

Thanks - I will look at 235/85R16s and although I love BFG ATs - they would be a waste...

The ACR 2.8 (Petrol 2.25 bored out) gives about 117Bhp and 177lb-ft of torque - I thought that was still within the capabilities of a good series 'box?

Thanks again- Im off to Abingdon now  :D

Oh right, I thought you were talking about the 2.8 TDi.   Anyway, that kind of output is outside the limits of the standard Series transmission.  It can have that amount of torque, and they do last okay if you're good with clutch and power control but don't expect things to not go bang (such as a gearbox mainshaft) with such high amounts of torque from the engine.

As I understand it - th UK is to adopt (2007?) the European rules ref tyre life - ie each tyre should have a month/year date stamped on it and it will be illegal to have anything over 5 years old and this will be checked during the MOT.

I am more than happy if I am wrong - but that is what I have read and had 'confirmed' by my local tyre place...

that should upset some of the more classical vehicles out there! I've seen thirty yearold tyres that have been turned often and so last ok......

i'm putting 235*85R16s on my series 3
they are slightly wider and also very slightly taller than my old 7.50R16 michelins

look damn good tho

standard SWB s3's had smaller tyres tho, 205R16 is the modern equivilent of the imperial size
