Title: Tonight my exhaust back box fell off....Fixed update...side exit
Post by: lee celtic on October 24, 2008, 22:24:53
Brilliant

Because now I can do the side exit bit

so I know this has been done on here before and I know the basics but it would be nice to see all the photos again in one thread so I can compare ideas and looks .

come on then show me what you've got  :afro: you know you want to

surely the idea is to simplify the system and prevent it getting damaged by tucking it out of the way- Not to make your truck look like a halfords ripspeed escapee, like david P suggests?

Erm, I was going to just do mine with a bit of flexi and getting a finisher from a marine chandlers- doesn't look too bad a job- although for some reason my local, friendly MOT tester told be to make sure it pointed slightly downwards? lol  No idea what that was about?!

Im sure itll look decent whatever you do mate- gotta be better than hanging quad pipes of the back fresh for being ripped off........ ;)

Chris you hit the nail on the head :D

shame that was all you hit  ;)

I just fancied getting all the side exit photos in one thread for reference and a bit of sensible chat about pros and cons of different ideas for putting one side exit exhaust out of the side where it won't get damaged . but some how David p managed to kill another thread dead with his stupid ideas

never mind eh it's only loads of us being hacked off by one so it doesn't matter

mods feel free to delete this thread......I won't be posting on it again........

the only thing you have to be carefull about on a side exit is to account for expansion in the metal. the side exit on out TD5 it set about a quarter of an ish further froward than it should be. grayham at overland explained to us that they expand(inthis case backwards) so much you can break the exhaust manifold, weather this is true or not i know not, it makes sense but i haven't had a problem with my side exit and its a pretty tight fit(although there is a massice piece of flexi pipe on there). but anyway you can noticeably see that the exhaust finisher has moved back after its been out for a run...

hope that helps lee

What boss said.....

Like he has done use flexi to take into account for expansion, and also 'should' if you secure the tailpipe well into the quarter lessen the vibration I would imagine?

I also have this trouble with my v8. Im none too worried though because i am taking the side exit off as the disco is being scrapped.

If your not in a major rush i could get some photos of my system when its off.

Gavin.

Newer landys. I am going to assume you are referring to Disco 3/ RR sport etc. Most are actually twin, exiting either side of the spare wheel, TUCKED OUT OF THE WAY! Some of the supercharged ones have Twin/quad pipes either side of the bumper, but is anyone really likely them offroad? Also, the newer ones are OEM not bolt on tat- Unlike what you are suggesting doing 'david p'. Once again you are talking out of an orifice that isnt your mouth.

Right.

Are you in fact trying to say;

Gav T's one is damn loud, but we would all like one at heart.

Some others, no i.e by the rear window (struggling to decipher this one- sorry to everyone else)

Bottom line, its a piece of pipe at the end of the day.

what does it sound like now the back box fell off? I have had the tiny bit of exit pipe fall off mine so far. Not enough to make me do a side exit yet!! Also when I get round to a side exit, it will reduce the amount of black on the front of my caravan I hope. It will probably end up down the side instead.

right then.

back on topic ...

I have heard that a few people have used a tax disc holder as a finisher around the side exit exhaust ..

Two questions .

1 , Has anyone used a steel one and did it react with the ali causing white fur .

2 , Is the hole in the disc holder the same size as the origional pipe or do I need to reduce the pipe size to get it through.

lee, oxidisation will always occour when you mate up alli with steel. i am using the D44 stainless ring for the finisher with silicone behind it to try to provent it a little but there isnt really a way of stopping it, it will eventually get through.

1,for me nothing has happend mate,no loss of silver or shine

2,what i done was use flexi pipe to make the bend where i wanted it and then sleeve a bit of old zorst pipe into flexi so that sticks out the side and looks like a proper pipe, then used heat mastic to cover hole and then chrome ring over the end with no hole showing, but can still move when on tick over and when it gets hot.so no noise and rattel

mine is like this and so are a few mates who at present have had no probs, mines been on for 6 months and off road almost every wk-end.

i hope this makes sense  :D

Cheers Guys...

I'm thinking of turning up a bit of Ali at work to look something like this (excuse the dodgy paint box drawing)

Basically it will be a one piece trim and pipe mounted through the body , bolted from the inside then a flexi pipe attached to the flange on the inside of the trim.
With a jubilee clamp (or similar)  Might even get it anodised a nice colour

What do you think ???     Will it work ???  What colour ???   purple , Black , red , gold , grey , blue ,

The rear body where the pipe will exit will be covered with brushed stainless before the ring is put in place to tidy the lower body up and match the spats I've put in front of the rear wheels...

mmmm goldy blue stainless .... :-k

I like your thinking I used to like the colour of stainless headers on bikes

And I have a full set of rumblers at work to mirror polish them while I sleep

Might be a bit heavy though and flex the body too much  :-k

Well do you remember this idea ????? :D

Well I turned up a bit of scrap billet at work then Drilled the holes and polished it up last night at home ...

I had to change the design a little as I didn't have a long enough tap to thread the holes from the inside so I drilled them right through and counter drilled them to fit the allen bolts flush. I also added the brushed stainless to tidy the rear quarter up ..

What do you think ??? I'm well chuffed with it

the bottom of the wing was mulered thats the only reason I put the stainless sheet over it I the wing had been ok I wouldn't have bothered it's held on with the trim bolts and a pop rivit under the arch trim.
