Today the series 3 started backfiring and stuttering quite badly.
Dont know whats up with it, dont know when it was last serviced.
Any ideas?

Misfire? Bad distributor cap or wires or plugs - if you still have the points in the dizzy, make sure they are set correctly also. If you got it wet recently it will make these issues worse, also. Check for condensation under the distributor cap.

Dizzy cap was dry as a bone, and relatively clean. Dont know about the rest, am going to change the leads and plugs next and see what happens.

its not a backfire - thats the after burners kicking in.

heheh... we've got 747 style raising undercarriage at the moment... or at least it sounds that way at about 30mph...... could be UJ's, could be bearings..... could be brakes binding............. could be anything :x

Well done the plugs and leads today, and it made the problem less, need to find out now how to turn the mixture down, cos the old plugs had dry black stuff over them which according to the haynes manual means the mixture is too rich!
But we will get there in the end!

Right, so now we have more issue, now it wont idle unless the choke is out fully and as i say its still running rich. Its got a zenith carb fitted and i dont know how to adjust this.
Its still misfiring, we cleaned out the air filter today and as said we have changed the leads and plugs, but i have no idea how to fix this, going to change the coil tomorrow, but is this going to help?

Starting to sound more like a sinking float, actually. If it is running very rich, poor at idle and takeoff, etc. and I believe you said the old plugs were black? If the float in the carb sinks, the mixture keeps getting richer and richer and you can't adjust it. I believe the Zenith also had a tendancy for the top of the bowl to warp causing it run poorly? - might be wrong on that one, been a long time since I muddled with one.

Has your points plate slipped? Try advancing the distributor on the knurled adjuster.

Tis now fixed, it were the dizzy that was at fault, now running faultlessly!

What was wrong with it? Was it wear on the distributor shaft bearing? I merely ask because my series 3, 6-cylinder 109 is backfiring on the overrun; I've fitted a new distributor (£75 from Craddock's) but it's still popping away when I lift my clog. Cheers.

if its backfiring on the overrun then i would say you have an air leak on the exhaust somewhere.
mines does it every time the exhaust manifold joint comes loose!

Thanks for that; I've fitted an exhaust, but it's still popping. If it gets much worse, I'll be fitting another one!!! I suppsoe it has to be timing, but I used the lamp method and set it to 2degrees ATDC, as it should be. It's a puzzle. On the other hand, just had a new carb, engine completely re-built by Inch's of Plymouth, so I've got a fairly sound 6-cylinder petrol LWB Series Three, and there aren't so many left.

I'd refit the exhaust aswell, little gaps never become apparent until under full load and hot.

the straight six back firing on over run points to advanced timing
are you running with unleaded
or with unleaded plus and octane additive
there is no need for the additive as it has hardened seats already
as it's an ali head and the block has hardened seats to
being a side valve engine
also check the advance pipe as these do leak as they cross the
whole engine bay
the cd175 is a good carb
is the cold start still fitted?

Thanks for the advice. The new carb is a cd 175, as you say. Bought it from Gower and Lee, Watford. They have a warehouse full of them. The distributor was £75 from Craddocks; they've got plenty as well. It is lacking the adjuster, but not any problem. Cold start is fitted...that is, the indicator light and contact. I've taken the exhaust manifold off and spent a happy three hours or so flattening it with a long rasp. It seems a lot better, now.

Gaskets, yes i believe you can.

I have manifold washers on the series three six cylinder petrol; but yes, you can get manifolds. Paddocks, probably best place to start, or the local dealer. If you have trouble, I'll get on to John Skentleberry in Plymouth, he'll fix you up.
