I've read somewhere that some Td5 110's may be fitted with a lower-than-standard transfer box. In an effort to make motorway cruising slightly more pleasant in my 110, I'd like to fit either a standard Defender T-box, or one of the Ashcroft ones with the D2 gearing.
My current T-box's serial number is 43D******G - which isn't listed on Ashcrofts site, and it's not a number they've come across before, which makes me think that it might be non-standard.
Can someone with a Td5 110 have a look at their T-box and let me know the serial number - the first three letters, and the last letter will be fine, I don't need the actual number.
Ta,

Hi Jim
My 2002 TD5 110 3 door can hardly make it over 55mph if I don't use the overdrive. I've finally booked it in to Ashcrofts on the 7th of next month for a recon gearbox and transfer case with the 1.22 gearing. I'll have a look at the numbers when they change it, and let you know if I can finally get to 70 without the overdrive!
Cheers

Tom - guess that's a re-mortgage job then !!
What overdrive do you have fitted ?

Costing around £1600. Bang goes the bonus, but well worth it considering the price of diesel! I have a GKN overdrive - I wanted to leave it in with the new gearbox, but Ashcrofts recommended against it.

Hi Jim
Finally got the new gear and transfer box today. Didn't get a chance to look at the serial number, but the old box was definitely a 1.4 ratio. As mentioned, I could previously only get 55 to 60mph max if I thrashed the engine with the 1.4 (overdrive off). The new 1.2 is far better - I pushed it to 80mph according to the speedo (75mph according to the sat nav). I got the feeling on the drive back that the gearing with the 1.2 is slightly less than the GKN overdrive, but is much better in 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

Cheers Tom,
I'm going to write to LR Traceability at Lode Lane - they should hold all the build information for each and every vehicle that rolls off the line, so if mine was spec'd with a low-ratio transfer box......the man at LR should know !
