hello all,
which TDI engine is better 200tdi or 300tdi
thanx
shaun

I prefer the 200tdi...it's a personal thing.
The 300tdi is a little more refined & it's torque curve is slightly different to 200tdi making it a little more user friendly.
200tdi are the basic of the tdi's & great for the home mechanic & overlanders as easy to repair.
Both are very robust & should return somewhere between 26-36mpg.

200tdi 8)

will the 300tdi disco engine bolt straight up to a 2.5td LT77 gearbox
shaun

300 has r380 gearbox dont it?
-
i think it does but i just wonderd if it would go onto a LT77 box
-
yer its do'able
200tdi for me
i'd have a td5 over a 300

300tdi its the only one iv tried

300
300
300
-
200....
200...
200.....
not to many electricy things to go wrong :D
-
my 300 is as electronic as a 200!
-
my 200 has 300 bits on it
-
200 for me, but thats because I have one.
The 300 is more refined as mentioned above the only issue I have heard about the 300 is that the cooling system is not as good as the 200.
but all personal choice I think
-
Probabley better chance of getting a decent 300,the 200 is getting a bit long in the tooth now.
-
300 tdi allday long regarding cooling issue's not now!!! 8) 8)

will the 300tdi disco engine bolt straight up to a 2.5td LT77 gearbox
shaun
no i dont think so, i know a 300 tdi gear box wont fit my 200tdi defender

change the flywheel housing

Just to pick up on this.....
Have I got this right? (all relating to LT77 in a Defender):
The 200tdi will fit onto any LT77
300tdi needs an R380 bell housing on the front of an LT77

Sort of....
Defender spec 200tdi will bolt straight onto a Defender spec LT77 or LT77s
A Disco spec 200Tdi needs two holes enlarging and tapping in the rear cover to fit a Defender spec Lt77 - as the bolt pattern on a Disco Lt77 bellhousing is different to a Defender Lt77 bellhousing.
To fit a Lt77 to a 300tdi you need to change the 300tdi rear cover (i.e. the bit that houses the flywheel) for a Na, Td, or 200Tdi one... it will then bolt straight up to a Lt77 bellhousing.

300 tdi allday long regarding cooling issue's not now!!! 8) 8)
Sorry to bring this old post up but what are the cooling issues with the 300tdi and what are the fixes for this? I'm installing a 300tdi and i really dont want to have problems with cooling issues.
many thanks
-
Ive got a 300 in my 1990 90 fitted onto an lt77 box and have not bothered with the lower 6 bolts and have had no issues. The cooling problem is all to do with the water pump being higher up on the 300 engine and the 'P' gasket that is behind the water pump housing on the block. If the later type gasket is fitted(metal) instead of the older paper type then there is no issue with it. The problem lies with the amount of coolant that is above the water pump. 1 small leak and the pump soon becomes just a paddle. If you can get hold of a header tank from a range rover with the coolant low level switch and fit it to your truck with a warning light etc you should be able to avoid any overheats. If you are fitting to an early TD or NA defender then change the header tank to a plastic type as the steel one is smaller and the caps usually open and loose coolant as there is more pressure in the system. Since doing mine I have been very impressed and it drives lovely.
-
or change the gasket for the metal type?

i've just finished putting an 300 onto an lt77, first conversion ive really done and if you can drill a few holes (Not a necessity but i felt more comfortable doing this than removing 6 studs) and a little bit of welding go for a 300. i'm really pleased with the delivery of torque, is very smooth got a load of pics in my gallery

my neighbors got a very nice 200 conversion, but but after coming on the test drive with me he now wants a 300.
only other thing i might do is put a disco transfer box on, but wont decide till i get it on the motorway. Would have liked to get an R380 if i could have afforded it, but i kno people whom have been running v8s on lt77s with no probs for years.

aparently so i have been told by a few ppl now a 200 tdi bell housing on the lt77 and a new spiget (sp) bush and jobs a good un!
-
think i'd go for an auto box though if i could afford to feed a v8 :D
-
exactly what i have done / am doing this week :)

I cant justify paying more than an extra £100 for somthing with a 300tdi engine rather than a 200. the 200 is a bit noisyer (makes it sound like you are thrashing it more than a 300) there is no real difference in power or torque.
i would much rather have a worn 200 than a worn 300. brand new out of the box i would side with the 300.
-
i'll go with you on that, if i were to go for a tdi with anything ove 100k it would have to be a 200 just for the simplicity of fixing bits and pieces. you'll get a low milage 300 for the same price as a worn 200 tho
-
I have put a disco transfer box on mine and it makes the world of difference.
-
What supposed to be so difficult about repairing a 300 tdi over a 200 tdi?? there's nothing i wouldn't do on mine i can do a Head change in about 2hrs i have no electric rubbish no egr and it's more powerful than a 200 i can have a decent alternator without chewing belts up oh and regarding mileage mine's done about 140,000 doesn't use any water or oil between oil changes doesn't leak oil other than a slight weep from the rear main (who's doesn't???) and start's on the button without glow plugs...But hey ho whatever.. :D
-
its not the difficulty of working on it (although the turbo is a little gay) its the fact that there are piles of spares kicking about at the moment mainly from disco's.
the 200's also seem a little more resistant to damage through overheating etc although i have no idea why.

got one sat in the shed, but havent really been out anywhere to have a good thrashing of the transmission. hmm...what cruising speed do you get with the disco box??
-
I can sit happily at 70 to 75 which is enuf for me and ive got 33s on. You will notice that you have to build up 4th to around 60 befor going to fifth but I find it very good and it brings the engine revs down to a sensible level. I can even hear the radio! Obviously I am using more fuel than standard but thats the tyres. 1 day i will try it with a set of 205s on to see how much cheaper it will be. Make sure you have your weetabix before the fitting coz those tboxes are f heavy!
-
sounds good, am i right in thinking that low range wont be affected???

correct

Or normal 5 speed with overdrive mine will pull from 30 in 5th to well over 70.....

I'm told the cooling system is screwed up on the early 300 head, new ones are cast with bigger waterways.
