hi chaps. my dad trooper 2.8td clutch is or has going [!Expletive Deleted!] up anytime soon and i ahgve the job to change it.
is it a easy job changing the clutchs like defenders?

Its all pretty straight forward but its a dam heavy box.

gear box will take atf oil doesnt it? and diffs and tranny box EP90 same as my defender?

Nooo trany and gear box both take engine oil, should be stamped on the filler plug to ;)

10w40 in both the transfer case and the gearbox.

Make sure you can undo the filler plug before dropping the oil though !! It's as tight as a nuns chuff normally.

hi again..

iv finily got around to do the clutch.

How the F$&K do you get them prop bolts off. there tight as hell.. and i cant get a socket or ring spanner on and brocken 2 open ended spanners?

and do i keep the crossmember on or take it off? my plan was to leave it on so i could just rest the bell housing on it?

2x 14mm combination spanners (use the ring end) .....

Try an angle grinder with a thin cutting disc on ;)

I believe you are supposed to replace the bolts when you remove the prop so it dont really matter if you destroy them :cool: :cool: :cool:

i got them off with my land rover prop shaft tool.

that box is bloody heavey.. and isuzu wins the award for putting 3 bell housing bolts right at the top where you cant get to the f**kers.. other then that it was bloody easy. still got to re-mate the box but it been raining and im not laying in the rain.

iv tryed for 2days to get that f*****g gear box lined up..is there any trick that any of you guys know that will make my life easyer? mind you i do have the front end on wheel ramps.. that isnt helping is.. ill have to try when its flat..

Engine should be slightly up at the front, or if you've taken the box out, front of the box pointing up slightly.

Did you align the clutch and the spigot bearing up correctly?  You'll never get the input shaft in if they are out of line.

It should only take about an hour of rocking and swearing to get the shaft to start. If it's not going something's probably out of line.

666: a trolly jack on that flat bit just in front of the rubber bush where the cross memeber goes..
and the other chap
all the spigot bearing that lined up.. just getting the splines on the clutch plate and input shaft.. it damn heavey box and i cant hold it up forever on my own.. got know one to help :'( and the fear of the bloody thing dropping on my [bollards] haha..

but 666: when it drys again (poored with snow again last night) will take the truck off the wheel ramps and try again because the bellhousing is high and cant seem to get arse end up without it pulling out of line..

What dont help is the weight of the transfer case on the side, it totally unbalances the gearbox.

I found having a long tube inside the motor with a hand winch attached was far better than trying to mess around with trolly jacks. Using this method i can change the clutch in about 5 hours, although i have the advantage of not needing to jack the motor up as its allready high enough to work on.

The engine will need to lean back towards the bulkhead, i also found that while getting the input shaft into the clutch splines it helped if i rotated the output flange back and forth ;)

bench press the box in ;)  it's a [!Expletive Deleted!], but it's not as heavy as it looks. Oh I'm a 10 stone puny guy and I've done it that way.

Knee on the transfer case, and hold behind the bell housing in your hands, and just ummpphh it into place.

Wish I still had one of my old YMT flywheels, one of them would make you wince  :lol: :lol:

i did it :) use the hand chain crain thingy.. took 6 bloody hours to get it lined up. itso on the shaft butgot about half inch more to push faward to start bolting on down..

be glad to get this job over with!! lol

 :D :D :D i got it all finshed and back on the road today!! went to gether sooo easily.. not one swear word come out my mouth which is a rearity lol
