last time i had to do this, i had to use a very large and heavy hammer.
i think the proper way to do it is to use a puller of some sort.

Try a bit of easing spray oil down the spline
If you have a friend to help, get one to pull on the steering wheel upward, while somebody hits the centre of the spline shaft in the indentation with a hammer and metal drift, while keeping the pulling pressure on the wheel, it should give

Just make sure you leave the main nut on a few turns....

The last thing you want is to be yanking at the steering wheel and it come off in your hands - resulting in a steering wheel hitting you in the face!!!

Removed!  :D   Used a large rubber hammer and some WD40, come off fairly easily considering it had been on there for 35 years!

Thanks for the advice

When I had to take it off my 110, all I had to do (once the nut was undone) was rock laterally a few times & it came off easily.

But I suppose it was only 4years old at the time.

i changed the lock barrels on my series 3 a couple of days before getting married - did the same smack in the face trick but with a pair of mole grips and a split pin. all my wedding photos have me with a nice red hole in my chin. muppet!
