Title: Freelander funny noises....
Post by: spy on January 23, 2009, 19:56:45
I borrowed a freelander tonight from work, it came in part ex.  One of the other lads at work is supposed to be buying it but it is making a funny noise.  If you take up drive roughly there is quite a knock from the back end.  Are there any common faults?

Also, as you turn tightly (particularly at full lock) it doesnt seem to want to roll.  As I turned into my drive (slopes downhill slightly) on a full right hand lock it almost stopped.  I was coasting but I would have expected it to roll further.  Is this the IRD beginning to seize up?  Is there a way to test the IRD unit?

Its a W reg 1.8 with 70k.  Engine rebuilt last year so that shouldnt be a problem.

Any tips for things to check?

Cheers all,

Mike

Rear diff mount, most probably the one on the nose of the diff. Fairly common and easyish to change.

Probably not. The VCU does tighten up in that situation.
To test:
car in 1st, handbrake off.
jack up 1 rear wheel
with large socket and long breaker bar on the lifted wheel's hub nut push the bar down
It should JUST move smoothly with a lot of effort.

Check all window electrics work, especially rear window.
If electric sunroof fitted check it works properly.
Check condition of VCU support bearings.
