Its a W reg Diesel. Its getting a lift (2inch) and I want to fit mud tyres. Whats the biggest tyre you can get to fit?

215/80/15 or 205/80/16 depending on what wheels you have...you can get away with 215/80/15 bronco diamond backs (if you can still get them) which have a 20mm tread and are more like .../90/.. profile but thet will rub slightly on rear of front wheel arches but will soon wear away the little bit of plastic...

Fantastic.
I have seen 2 nch lift kits but was toying with whether you could get away with a 3 inch?

You'll run out of clearance. The steering arms will foul the 'chassis rail' inside the inner wing at full rebound. We have a 2" lift and the inner wing is cut right down to the rail. We had to move the fuel pipes which used to run on top of the rail too.
Also, the bottom of the strut is likely to foul the driveshaft at full rebound. Ours get pretty close at 2" lift.
Another issue is the life of the CV joints when they are running constantly at a severe angle.
Tyres:
We have 215/75x15 BFG all terrains and they don't foul.

Big G from MAD freelanders had more than a 2 inch lift AFAIK. Dont know what he did to address the clearance issues.may be worth a visit to www.mad-freelanders.org to find out. loads of other tyre and lift info under technical.

ive just got new 04 freelander with 17inch wheels by fitting 215 80 15 rather than standerd size will this efect the speedo

Yes if radius is different
On mine - a calculation showed teht teh speedo would be 8mph out of sync
However - checking with satnav it is only 2mph out so not so bad
For calculation Look Here (http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html) (about 1/2 way down page)

The Freelander doesn't seem to like full-on mud tyres. I'm told that AT tyres work better with the traction control system, and get through stuff that mud-tyres get stuck in.
Mine's got General Grabber AT2s on, and they got me around the course at Abingdon without any drama.

Likewise, we run ours on BFG AT's and it has never had a problem with anything we have thrown at it. It even managed to do a full stop and pull away on the concrete gulley at Billing. None of the Defenders would have managed that without stalling or spinning wheels
